The sun goes through cycles of high and low activity that repeat approximately every 11 years. Solar minimum refers to the several Earth years when the number of sunspots is lowest; solar maximum occurs in the years when sunspots are most numerous. During solar maximum, activity on the sun and the possibility of space weather effects on our terrestrial environment is higher. The next solar maximum is expected in the 2013-2014 time frame. No current observations or data show any impending catastrophic solar event. In fact, scientists believe the intensity of the upcoming coming solar maximum will be similar to the previous maximum in 2002.

We have never been so well prepared for the onset of the next solar cycle. NASA maintains a fleet of Heliophysics spacecraft to monitor the sun, geospace, and the space environment between the sun and the Earth.

NASA cooperates with other U.S. agencies to enable new knowledge in studying the sun and its processes. To facilitate and enable this cooperation, NASA’s Heliophysics Division makes its vast research data sets and models publicly available online to industry, academia, and other civil and military space weather interests. Also provided are publicly available sites for citizen science and space situational awareness through various cell phone and e-tablet applications.

Here's the REAL reason the US Dollar is shrinking... and will continue to shrink!When you finish reading this article, you may change your mind about the war in Iraq.

I've written about extraterrestrials, HAARP and even the end of the world. So when Viewzone asked me to write about a boring topic like "global currency" I was inclined to say, "no way!" Heck, I can't even balance my checkbook. Money has always slipped through my fingers like beach sand. But I like a challenge, so here it is.

The information they gave me came from a brilliant investigative journalist, Rudo de Ruijter. It took time for me to digest what he wrote, and even more time to understand the importance of what he revealed. I must confess, I'm still shocked by what I learned.

This information is not new. International bankers and politicians know these facts all too well. It's the ordinary people -- the little guys like us -- who are told that these things are too complex for us to understand; yet it is because of "global currency" that we invaded Iraq, Afghanistan and, perhaps soon, also Iran. Sure, it's all about oil -- but not the way you think.

What is "money?"

At the dawn of civilization, the earliest way to get something that you needed was called barter. I give you a cow and you build me a hut to live in. But what if I want a tiny hut? Do I give you half a cow? Placing a standard value on goods and services was first achieved through the use of currency, or money. Almost every culture has money. Ancient cultures used everything from sea shells and beads to huge circular stones to buy and sell. Eventually, precious metals were used and more recently the standard currency has been based on gold.

The value of precious metal is determined by its weight. Instead of carrying chunks or nuggets of gold and silver, early empires made standard "coins" of the metals and set a standard value in the marketplace. Coins were great for most transactions, but they were heavy and wore out your pants pockets quickly. Soon a new idea, paper money, was invented.

The original idea behind paper money was convenience. Each piece of paper represented a specific weight of a precious metal, usually silver or gold, that was kept somewhere in a treasury. If an individual wanted to, he could exchange the paper money for the gold or silver that it represented. It was all based on trust and a promise. In fact, the early paper money in America was called a "promisary note."

If you can find old dollar bills, you will read the promise written on each note. You will also notice that the notes are numbered. In this way, each note is unique and represents a corresponding weight of silver or gold in the US Treasury vaults.

On a global scale, when someone in America bought something from a foreign country, they would pay in US dollars. The foreign company would then go to their local bank and exchange the dollars for their local currency. When foreign banks had a surplus of US dollars, they would then exchange them for gold. This meant that the US Treasury was always needing to acquire more gold to replenish its vaults and maintain the "gold backed" dollars in circulation.

Prior to 1971 the dollars of the US were trusted all over the world. Each dollar was based on 1/35th ounce of gold, held in the US Treasury. The value of gold was fixed by law at 35 dollars = 1 ounce, so the value of each dollar was very stable. This made the dollar attractive as an international currency. But in 1971 this all changed.

The Nixon Legacy -- fiat money

The Vietnam War was a painful time for America. We're still paying for the sins of our past leaders -- quite literally. The war was so expensive (estimated at $500 Billion) that America didn't have sufficient dollars in print to pay the bills for the disaster (The gold reserve only had about 30 Billion). But Nixon had a plan. Why not just print more dollars? Never mind that there isn't enough gold on reserve to back each note. Just print as much as you need to pay the bills.

To do this he needed to change the law. So he did. The new system is called "fiat money" and is defined as follows: "Definition: Fiat money is money that is intrinsically useless; is used only as a medium of exchange." He ended the system of "promisary notes," ended the fixed value of gold and allowed the system of "supply and demand" to set the value of both gold and American currency. But wait! There's more!

Enter Oil: Black Gold

Back in the early 1970's, America produced most of the oil it needed. Texas oil fields were active and a far cry from the rusted rigs you can still see there today. We imported a fixed amount, about 25%, from foreign countries, but our thirst for oil was getting stronger. Nixon knew that America and every developing nation in the world would need more oil in the future. He also knew that OPEC, the handful of countries that produced foreign oil, wanted the limits of American imports lifted so they could sell more. So he cut a deal.

The cap on 25% imported oil was lifted in exchange for the agreement that oil, purchased from any country in the world, would be bought only with American dollars. OPEC agreed and almost immediately there was a strong demand for dollars throughout the globe. This demand was not based on the value of gold but on the value that each dollar had in the marketplace. Since anyone who wanted oil had to have dollars, the dollar remained strong.

Another thing that helped pull this scheme off was the fact that gold, held by the US Treasury, went from its fixed value of $35/ounce to its present value of over $600/ounce. Of course a cup of coffee was once 5¢ and now my Starbucks Latte-Macchiato-double-Skim is close to $5!

Coffee, Automobiles and Computers: The Plot Thickens

Oil is a big import but not the biggest. Americans buy so many things from foreign countries that it is staggering to imagine. In 1973 the US sold more goods to foreign countries than it bought. But in each successive year the tables have turned.

All of these goods are bought with "fiat dollars," meaning that the currency itself is worthless since it can never be exchanged for gold or silver. Of course, a foreign country could exchange it for something else -- something that was produced by America, like... hmm... (anyway). As the chart above shows, American exports, although representing 1.25 million dollars every two seconds, are insignificant.

Fiat dollars remain in circulation mainly because they are needed to buy oil. For this reason lots of countries keep huge supplies of dollars in their reserves. It has become a way of storing their national wealth. The fact that US dollars represent foreign national wealth adds to their value.

Good Is Bad: Bad Is Good

This kind of system turns traditional logic on its head. Like, a trade defecit is supposed to be a bad thing, right? Wrong. It's actually good for the dollar! Imagine what would happen if everyone started using their dollars to buy things from America. The US would be flooded with dollars which would cause inflation and, besides, we don't have enough goods and services to exchange for all those foreign US fiat dollars! In fact, America is technically, as of last year, bankrupt!

And what about higher oil prices... bad? No way. That keeps those pesky foreign flat US dollars "out there" and in high demand. It's very good for the dollar. Globalization, Nafta and Free Trade? Yep, they're also good for the dollar since they perpetuate the demand for greenbacks.

The whole system is kept running smoothly by global central banks who monitor the supply and demand for dollars on a daily -- even hourly -- basis. If there are too many dollars "out there" in the world, the US buys its own currency to create a scarcity. If there are too few, it sells more dollars or buys more foreign goods to replenish the supply.

If this is beginning to sound like a classic "pyramid scheme," you're starting to get the picture. But sooner or later, someone has to pay.

Houston, we have a problem!

Imagine what would happen if the oil producing countries in OPEC decided to sell oil in some other currency besides US dollars! What if they changed the system to use the Euro, the Franc or the Yen? What would happen if no one needed US dollars anymore? Hang on tight, it's already started.

Medvedev Shows Off Sample Coin of New 'World Currency' at G-8

July 10 2009 (Bloomberg) -- Russian President Dmitry Medvedev illustrated his call for a supranational currency to replace the dollar by pulling from his pocket a sample coin of a "united future world currency."

"Here it is," Medvedev told reporters today in L'Aquila, Italy, after a summit of the Group of Eight nations. "You can see it and touch it."

The coin, which bears the words "unity in diversity," was minted in Belgium and presented to the heads of G-8 delegations, Medvedev said.

The question of a supranational currency "concerns everyone now, even the mints," Medvedev said. The test coin "means they're getting ready. I think it's a good sign that we understand how interdependent we are."

Medvedev has repeatedly called for creating a mix of regional reserve currencies as part of the drive to address the global financial crisis, while questioning the U.S. dollar's future as a global reserve currency.

Russia's proposals for the G-20 meeting in London in April included the creation of a supranational currency.

Iraq
On November 6, 2000, Saddam Hussein switched the oil currency from the US dollar to the Euro. Two years later the Euro was rising in value while the dollar was sinking so low that the International Monitary Fund warned of the dollar's imminent collapse. The solution: Iraq was invaded on the pretext of developing weapons of mass destruction, the oil fields were seized and the newly installed government returned to the US dollar standard on March 19, 2003. Other nations, who held large dollar reserves, joined the coalition and contributed troops to pull this off.

Venezuela
Hugo Chavez has recently announced plans to nationalize the country's oil industry. Although Venezuela is a major oil producer and a member of OPEC, they have sold their oil to Cuba and other regional countries without the use of dollars and often in a barter exchange for domestically produced products. In 2001, Venezuela's ambassador to Russia announced that Venezuela was considering switching to oil sales in the Euro. Within one year the American government was seeking a regime change and America has been accused by Chavez of attempting to assassinate him in a failed coup attempt backed by the CIA.

Russia
Since June 8, 2006, Russia's Putin has been selling its reserves of US dollars. This has been done slowly to diminish any dramatic effect on the global supply, but it represents a decision of Russia to divest itself of a dollar reserve. The world market has taken notice.

China
An unprecedented signal from senior Chinese leaders that the Asian economic giant might abandon the U.S. dollar sent shockwaves through the markets today as the Dow Jones Industrial Average lost 360 points and the greenback fell to a record low against the euro.

November 19, 2007:
Xu Jian, a Chinese central bank vice director, told a conference in Beijing, "The dollar is "losing its status as the world currency." Meanwhile, at the same meeting, Cheng Siwei, vice chairman of China's National People's Congress, said, "We will favor stronger currencies over weaker ones, and will readjust accordingly."

Craig R. Smith, CEO of Swiss America Trading Corp., told WND he's been in the investment business for 30 years and has "never seen people more nervous."

Alarmed by today's economic news, he dispatched a note to brokers with a warning of ominous potential consequences if China and other trading partners abandon the dollar.

"If that were to happen, all bets are off, and we will be in a depression that makes 1929 look like child's play," he said, "or we will experience Weimar Republic inflation as the dollar makes extreme moves toward devaluations."

Russia Dumps US Dollar As Basic Reserve Currency

(Pravda) -- The US dollar is not Russia's basic reserve currency anymore. The euro-based share of reserve assets of Russia's Central Bank increased to the level of 47.5 percent as of January 1, 2009 and exceeded the investments in dollar assets, which made up 41.5 percent, The Vedomosti newspaper wrote.
The dollar has thus lost the status of the basic reserve currency for the Russian Central Bank, the annual report, which the bank provided to the State Duma, said.

In accordance with the report, about 47.5 percent of the currency assets of the Russian Central Bank were based on the euro, whereas the dollar-based assets made up 41.5 percent as of the beginning of the current year. The situation was totally different at the beginning of the previous year: 47 percent of investments were made in US dollars, while the euro investments were evaluated at 42 percent.

The dollar share had increased to 49 percent and remained so as of October 1. The euro share made up 40 percent. The rest of investments were based on the British pound, the Japanese yen and the Swiss frank.
The report also said that the reserve currency assets of the Russian Central Bank were cut by $56.6 billion. The losses mostly occurred at the end of the year, when the Central Bank was forced to conduct massive interventions to curb the run of traders who rushed to buy up foreign currencies. The currency assets of the Central Bank had grown to $537.6 billion by October 2008. Therefore, the index dropped by almost $133 billion within the recent three months.

The majority of Russian companies, banks and most of the Russian population started to purchase enormous amounts of foreign currencies at the end of 2008. The dollar gained 16 percent and the euro 13.5 percent over the fourth quarter. The demand on the US dollar was extremely high, and the Central Bank was forced to spend a big part of its dollar assets, experts say.

The change of the structure of the currency portfolio of the Bank of Russia has not affected the official peg of the dual currency basket, which includes $0.55 and 0.45 EUR.

The investments of the Bank of Russia in state securities of foreign issuers have been considerably increased, the report said. About a third of Russia's international reserves are based on US Treasury bonds.

Russia became one of the largest creditors of the US administration last year, the US Department of the Treasury said. Russia increased its investments in the debt securities of the US Treasury from $32.7 billion as of December 2007 to $116.4 billion as of December 2008.

India

Dollar no longer welcome at Taj Mahal

The Taj Mahal may have been built as a testament to love but some hard-headed business decisions are now holding sway at India's most famous monument. First among them is that the US dollar is no longer welcome.

With parts of the American economy in turmoil and the dollar rapidly losing its long-held position as the currency of choice, Indian authorities have calculated they are losing considerable sums of money by allowing foreign tourists to pay using greenbacks.

A statement by India's Ministry for Tourism and Culture said the government had decided to act "in view of the international practices and also to avoid any anomaly on account of falling exchange rates of the US dollar vis-a-vis the rupee and the consequent fall in revenues".

Until the change, foreign tourists visiting the Taj Mahal in Agra, south-west of Delhi, could enter by paying a fixed $5 (Â£2.45) fee â€“ a price that was set when the dollar was worth around R50. But with the dollar having fallen by 12 per cent this year against the rupee and the current exchange rate closer to R39 to the dollar, the government has now fixed the entry price for foreigners at R250 â€“ more than $6.

"These rates have been fixed in line with international practices," a ministry spokesman said. "It will avoid any anomaly on account of falling dollar-rupee exchange rates."

The ruling will affect around 120 sites overseen by the Archaeological Society of India, of which 27 â€“ including the Taj Mahal â€“ are World Heritage sites. The new rates are expected to be introduced as soon as this week to avoid a loss of income as the value of the dollar continues to fall.

Indonesia, Malaysia and Lybia
Other oil producing countries have already stated that they will begin moving from the dollar to the Euro. Indonesia, Malaysia and Lybia have already started this transition. Other countries like China and Japan are also beginning to convert a portion of their reserves to the Euro.

Iran
The US buys no oil from Iran following the hostage crisis in the 1970s. But Iran is a major global oil producer and, therefore, a major player in the "fiat dollar" scheme. In 1999 Iran announced plans to sell its oil in Euros. It actually started doing this in the spring of 2003. Iran sells about a third of its oil to European countries, the remaining share is largely bought by China. Following the announcement by Iran, the country was called an "axis of evil" by Bush and is currently the target of threats over its development of nuclear energy. At this writing, the US Navy has a large fleet in the Persian Gulf with contingency plans for an attack. Undoubtedly the desired outcome is regime change and re-establishment of the fiat dollar scheme.

WorldIran stops accepting U.S. dollars for oil

TEHRAN, December 8 (RIA Novosti) - Iran has stopped selling its oil for U.S. dollars, the Iranian ISNA news agency said on Saturday, citing the country's oil minister.

"In line with a policy of selling crude oil in currencies other than the U.S. dollar, the sale of our country's oil in U.S. dollars has been completely eliminated," ISNA reported Oil Minister Gholamhossein Nozari as saying.
He also said "the dollar is no longer a reliable currency."

Iran is the world's fourth-largest crude oil producer.

At a November summit of Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries heads of state, Iran proposed that oil sales be carried for a variety of currencies, excluding dollars, but was not supported by any other members except Venezuela.

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad had previously called the U.S. currency a "worthless piece of paper."

2007 has seen a significant fall in the value of the U.S dollar against other major world currencies.
Tensions remain high between Iran and the U.S., which has accused the Islamic Republic of attempting to build a nuclear weapon, as well as providing insistence to insurgents in Iraq.

The U.S. National Intelligence Estimate (NIE), published on Monday, stated that Tehran had put a stop to weapons production in 2003, although it was continuing to enrich uranium.

The report contradicted a previous U.S. intelligence assessment in 2005 which said that Iran was actively pursuing a nuclear bomb.

U.S. President George W. Bush remained hawkish, despite the report, saying on Tuesday that, "Iran was dangerous, Iran is dangerous and Iran will be dangerous if they have the know how to make a nuclear weapon."

When asked if military action remained an option, the president answered, "The best diplomacy - effective diplomacy - is one in which all options are on the table."

Oil leaders' private debate televised by mistake!

'Kill the cable, kill the cable,' shouted the security guard as he burst through the double doors into the media room at the Intercontinental Hotel in Riyadh, followed by Saudi police. It was too late.

A private meeting of Opec leaders, gathered this weekend in Riyadh for the cartel's third meeting in its 47-year history, had just been broadcast to the world's media for more than half an hour after a technician had mistakenly plugged the TV feed into the wrong socket. The facade of unity that the cartel so carefully cultivates to a world spooked by soaring oil prices was shattered.

Sometimes, such innocent mistakes can have far-reaching economic and political consequences. Commodity and currency traders said this weekend that oil prices would surge again tomorrow - possibly breaking the $101 per barrel record set in the late 1970s - while the already battered dollar would fall further on the back of the unintentional broadcast.

On Friday night, during what the participants thought were private talks, Venezuela's oil minister Venezuela Rafael Ramirez and his Iranian counterpart Gholamhossein Nozari, argued that pricing - and selling - oil using the crippled dollar was damaging the cartel.

They said Opec should formally express its concern about the weakness of the dollar when the cartel makes its official declaration at the close of the summit today. But the Saudis, the world's largest oil producers and de facto head of Opec, vetoed the proposal. Saud al-Faisal, the Saudi foreign minister, warned that even the mere mention to journalists of the fact that leaders were discussing the weak dollar would cause the US currency to plummet.

Unfortunately his words and those of everyone at the meeting were being broadcast via a live television feed to a group of astonished reporters. 'I couldn't believe it,' said one who was there. 'When I realised they didn't know they were being broadcast live, I frantically started taking notes.'

Opec only realised that the leaders' row was being broadcast to the world when the Reuters news agency put out a report of the argument.

The weakness of the dollar is one reason why oil prices are so high, as cartel members seek to compensate for their lower earnings. This means a further drop in the dollar is likely to be accompanied by a rise in oil prices.

Afghanistan
Afghanistan does not produce oil; however they are strategically located in an area where a proposed pipeline from the oil rich regions in the Caspian Sea would deliver the oil to the Indian Ocean. In his previous article, Rudo de Ruijter outlined how resistance to this plan triggered the American war with Afghanistan.

What Does It All Mean?

I used to believe that politicians and big business were evil. They always seemed to act without regard for the common people. It's always the innocent families and civilians that are left homeless, killed or maimed because of some decision made behind closed doors. I used to think it was the elite, super-rich who were protecting their wealth and greed for oil money at our expense. I blamed them for everything from wars to preventing the development of free energy.

While I still believe this is true, I now see the big picture and it frightens me.

Oil and dollars have become the blood of our present civilization. A collapse of this fiat dollar system will not only destroy America's economy and lifestyle but it will have devastating impact throughout the entire planet. Since virtually all wealth is based on this dollar-for-oil scheme, a collapse of the system will send the entire world into an economic depression. This is what the politicians and decision makers are trying to avert. But the collapse is predictable and inevitable.

I cannot help but wonder what kind of world awaits us on the other side. What would a dollarless and oil free civilization be like? What if we had endless supplies of free energy and no need for wars or money? At 56 years old, I may not get there with you. But, I have a dream.

Forecast: U.S. dollar could plunge 90%

RHINEBECK, N.Y., Nov. 19 (UPI) -- A financial crisis will likely send the U.S. dollar into a free fall of as much as 90 percent and gold soaring to $2,000 an ounce, a trends researcher said.

"We are going to see economic times the likes of which no living person has seen," Trends Research Institute Director Gerald Celente said, forecasting a "Panic of 2008."

"The bigger they are, the harder they'll fall," he said in an interview with New York's Hudson Valley Business Journal.

Celente -- who forecast the subprime mortgage financial crisis and the dollar's decline a year ago and gold's current rise in May -- told the newspaper the subprime mortgage meltdown was just the first "small, high-risk segment of the market" to collapse.

Derivative dealers, hedge funds, buyout firms and other market players will also unravel, he said.
Massive corporate losses, such as those recently posted by Citigroup Inc. and General Motors Corp., will also be fairly common "for some time to come," he said.

He said he would not "be surprised if giants tumble to their deaths," Celente said.

The Panic of 2008 will lead to a lower U.S. standard of living, he said.

A result will be a drop in holiday spending a year from now, followed by a permanent end of the "retail holiday frenzy" that has driven the U.S. economy since the 1940s, he said.

Iran says to sell oil in 'every currency'
Iran's Oil Minister Kazem Vaziri Hamaneh has said that the Islamic Republic will sell its oil in all currencies.

"Our oil sales will be in every currency," Dow Jones reported Hamaneh as saying on the sidelines of an OPEC meeting in Vienna on Thursday.

Iran has already said it will carry out all its oil-industry related equipment purchases in euros instead of dollars and previously said it has informed its oil buyers that they should pay Iran in euros for the crude oil they purchase.

"We need oil currencies," Vaziri said.

Note the effect on the dollar's decline as compared to the Euro.

The actual start of this new policy is April but fear is aleady having an effect.

Earlier on Wednesday, the media reported that Iran has started talks with a Japanese refiner to receive the payments in euro or yens instead of U.S. Dollars.

This appears to be a new tactic to dodge recent U.S. economic pressures against the Islamic Republic as Washington has been pressing overseas banks to stop dollar transactions with Iranian banks.

Japan is a major importer of Iranian crude and reportedly buys 486,000 barrels of oil per day out of Iran's production of about 3.8 million bpd

Paling ketara untuk bulan Disember. Dengan begitu banyak gaji, bonus masuk, tapi kemana hilangnya??

Living on Debt

1. Sayyidna Abdullah ibn Umar, Radi-Allahu anhu, reports that Rasulullah said, 'All the sins of a martyr are forgiven except his debts.' (Muslim)

In another Hadith, mention is made of Rasulullah (Sallallaahu Alayhi Wasallam) refusing to perform the Janaaza Salat of such people who had died owing debt without leaving sufficient wealth to discharge it.' (Bukhari)

We can understand from the above that one should as far as possible refrain from taking things on credit and getting involved in debt. It is definitely preferable to do all transactions in cash. And Allah Ta'ala Knows Best.

2. Islam takes the matter of debt very seriously and warns against it and urges the Muslim to avoid it as much as possible.

It was narrated from ‘Aa’ishah (may Allaah be pleased with her) that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) used to say in his prayer: “Allaahumma inni a’oodhi bika min al-ma’tham wa’l-maghram (O Allaah, I seek refuge with You from sin and heavy debt).” Someone said to him: “How often you seek refuge from heavy debt!” He said: “When a man gets into debt, he speak and tells lies, and he makes a promise and breaks it.” Narrated by al-Bukhaari (832) and Muslim (589).

Al-Nasaa’i (4605) narrated that Muhammad ibn Jahsh (may Allaah be pleased with him) said:

We were sitting with the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) when he raised his head towards the sky, then he put his palm on his forehead and said: “Subhaan-Allaah! What a strict issue has been revealed to me!” We remained silent and were afraid. The following morning I asked him, “O Messenger of Allaah, what is this strict issue that has been revealed?” He said, “By the One in Whose hand is my soul, if a man were killed in battle for the sake of Allaah, then brought back to life, then killed and brought back to life again, then killed, and he owed a debt, he would not enter Paradise until his debt was paid off.” Classed as hasan by al-Albaani in Saheeh al-Nasaa’i, 4367.

The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) refrained from offering the funeral prayer for one who had died owing two dinars, until Abu Qataadah (may Allaah be pleased with him) promised to pay it off for him. When he saw him the following day and said, I have paid it off, the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “Now his skin has become cool for him.” Musnad Ahmad (3/629); classed as hasan by al-Nawawi in al-Khalaasah (2/931) and by Ibn Muflih in al-Adaab al-Shar’iyyah (1/104).

“Whoever dies free from three things – arrogance, cheating and debt – will enter Paradise.”

Narrated by al-Tirmidhi (1572); classed as saheeh by al-Albaani in Saheeh al-Tirmidhi.

3. It was narrated that Abu Hurayrah said: The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “The soul of the believer is suspended because of his debt until it is paid off.” Narrated by al-Tirmidhi (1078).

Al-Mubaarakfoori said in Tuhfat al-Ahwadhi (4/164):

The words “the soul of the believer is suspended” – al-Suyooti said: i.e., it is detained and kept from reaching its noble destination. Al-‘Iraaqi said: i.e., no judgement is passed as to whether it will be saved or doomed until it is determined whether his debt will be paid off or not. End quote.

Ibn ‘Abd al-Barr said in al-Tamheed (23/238):

The debt for which a person will be kept out of Paradise – and Allaah knows best – is that for which he left behind enough to pay it off but he did not leave instructions to that effect, or he was able to pay it off but did not do so, or he took the loan for some unlawful or extravagant matter and died without having paid it off.

Persoalannya, adakah An akan melalui kes yang sama? Umur rakan tu An percaya 30-an juga. Dah berapa tahun dah tu tangguh? Kalau ambil kira inflasi, memang dah rugi sangat dah tu.

Adakah janji ditangguh seminggu membawa ke dua minggu membawa ke sebulan membawa ke dua bulan dan langsung senyap sepi dan kini selepas setahun baharu dengar cerita, mempunyai harapan untuk dilangsaikan, walaupun sekadar 50% dari hutang asal? An pun tak tau....

Telah dijelaskan diatas, betapa bahayanya memungkiri janji dan hutang. Dan semua ini adalah JANJI Allah. Dan takutlah dengan Hadis riwayat Al-Tarmizi: The soul of the believer is suspended because of his debt until it is paid off!

'Hormuz naval drill, message to West'

“The [Iranian] Navy's military maneuvers in the Persian Gulf and the Sea of Oman indicate the power and dominance of Iran's Navy in regional waters,” member of the Majlis (parliament) National Security and Foreign Policy Committee Zohreh Elahian said Monday.

The lawmaker stated that military drills also aim to increase Iran's deterrence power and prove its regional dominance.

“The exercises send an important message to the whole world, especially the colonialist powers…and also show the power of [Iran's] armed forces, particularly [the country's] Navy,” she noted.

Elahian added foreign media have admitted that Iran and its Navy are so powerful that if threatened, the country can take control of the Strait of Hormuz as the global economic and energy conduit.

On Saturday, December 24, Iran's Navy launched a massive 10-day Velayat 90 naval exercise, covering an area stretching from the east of the Strait of Hormuz in the Persian Gulf to the Gulf of Aden.

Different classes of submarines, including Tareq and Qadir, the newest ground-to-sea missile systems and torpedoes have been employed in the maneuvers.

Over the past years, Iran has made important breakthroughs in its defense sector and attained self-sufficiency in producing important military equipment and systems.

The country has repeatedly clarified that its military might is merely based on the nation's defense doctrine of deterrence and poses no threat to other countries.

Velayat-90 maneuvers showed Iran’s readiness: Iranian navy commander

Tehran, Jan 6, IRNA – Commander of the Islamic Republic of Iran’s Navy Rear Admiral Habibollah Sayyari said that the success of Velayat-90 military maneuvers in the Persian Gulf and Indian Ocean shows the capabilities and preparedness of Iran’s armed forces and their loyalty.

Speaking on Islamic Republic of Iran’s national TV on Thursday, Admiral Sayyari said that Velayat-90 military drills is in continuation of holding annual maneuvers with special features such as using new tactics, evaluating the communication capabilities and conducting electronic warfare, as well as conducting the operation in a vast area.

He also referred to other peculiarities of Velayat-90 military drills as assessing the relevant trainings in compliance with threats, vast deployment of forces alongside coasts, and extensive use of surface-to-surface missiles.

Referring to the remarks by the Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei who termed the Islamic Republic of Iran’s Navy a strategic force, Admiral Sayyari said that Iranian Navy should be present in international waters, otherwise it will not achieve its main objectives.

Pointing out that the fact the message of Iran’s military maneuvers was sending message of peace and friendship to the countries of the region, the navy commander

IRGC begins military drills in Iran's Khaf

Commander of IRGC Ground Forces Brigadier General Mohammad Pakpour said the first phase of the exercise has started on Saturday in the vicinity of Khaf city, adding that the main phase of the maneuvers will kick off on Monday.

Bolstering security along Iran's border areas and strengthening the combat readiness of the IRGC Ground Forces are the main goals of the drills, he added.

“Transferring the experiences of the Sacred Defense [Iran's eight-year war with Iraq] to the new generation and young officers and practicing tactical strategies of [the IRGC] ground forces in various combat sections of asymmetrical warfare are other goals of the Shohaday-e Vahdat drills,” he added.

Pakpour said the IRGC would use some of its tactical capabilities and innovations during the drills.

Noting that the exercise also aims to increase the readiness of IRGC forces under extreme climatic conditions, the commander said, “Shohaday-e Vahdat maneuvers are taking place in Khaf where the temperature drops 15-21 degrees below zero.”

On Friday, Iranian lawmaker Heshmatollah Falahatpisheh explained that the country holds military drills in response to enemy threats particularly those posed by the US, which uses the language of threat against Iran, and its moves in the region can only be considered hostile.

On December 24, 2011, Iran's Navy launched a massive 10-day naval exercise codenamed Velayat 90 which covered an area stretching from the east of the Strait of Hormuz in the Persian Gulf to the Gulf of Aden.

Different classes of submarines, including Tareq and Ghadir, the newest surface-to-sea missile systems, and torpedoes were employed in the maneuvers.

The Islamic Revolution Guards Corps Navy announced on January 5 that the IRGC would be holding a major military maneuver in the Persian Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz in February.

IRGC Navy Commander Rear Admiral Ali Fadavi said the drill, the seventh in a series of drills dubbed the Great Prophet, will be different compared to previous exercises held by the IRGC.

The Strait of Hormuz, a narrow waterway between Iran and Oman, connects the Persian Gulf with the Sea of Oman and is a major oil route.

The Ministry of Defense confirmed on Saturday that the one-billion-pound destroyer would join the British presence in the region.

The Telegraph claimed the vessel has been fitted with new technology in order to shoot down any missile in Iran's armory.

The new anti-Iran measure comes after the US is reportedly sending thousands of American troops, warships and weaponry to Israel for joint military maneuvers with Tel Aviv.

Commander of the US Third Air Force based in Germany Lt.-Gen Frank Gorenc described the deployment as not just an "exercise," but a "deployment."

The US and its Western allies have put more pressure on Iran following the release of the latest report by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in November.

The IAEA accused Tehran of conducting activities related to developing nuclear weapons. Iran, however, strongly dismissed the allegations.

The war threats come after four rounds of US-backed sanctions imposed by the UN and unilateral sanctions by certain US allies failed to stop Iran's peaceful nuclear program.

Last week, Iran's Navy wrapped up massive 10-day military drills in the strategic Strait of Hormuz to show that the country is ready to defend itself against any attack.

Lynas Malaysia proclaim rare earths are high in demand, the price explosion is expected to increase the prices of end products. Is it true?

According to Yahoo!, "Companies in sectors including energy, chemicals, and automotive are all in danger of being hit with shortages of rare earth metals".

Rare earth metals are key to global efforts to switch to cleaner energy. Rare earth are currently used in LCD screens, LED screens, touch screen display (iPad, iPhone, jada jada..), Solar Panel, Wind Turbines magnets, Hybrid Car batteries, catalysts to reduce automobile exhaust emissions, energy-saving electronics etc etc..

Today, every Prius hybrid car on the road carries about 10 pounds of lanthanum. And yet, most Prius owners don't even know they use this rare earth element every day. That's because the car's battery is referred to as "nickel-metal hydride".

Its fascinating to know, many of so-called 'green technology' product are using rare earth material.

Rare earth elements work a bit like vitamins. Rare earths have really unique chemical and physical properties that allow them to interact with other elements and get results that neither element could get on its own.

For instance, one of the material call Indium are widely used in touch screen display and LCD. Indium-tin-oxide, or ITO is standard material used in these product. But, Indium is expensive (the reason why pricey iPhone) and hard to find (that's why we called them rare earth material).

That's where scientist and physicist saw Graphene as suitable replacement. Graphene surprisingly easy to produce and inexpensive. (refer my previous post, linked at the beginning of this post).

Rare Earth Environmental Concern

China’s rare earth industry each year produces more than five times the amount of waste gas, including deadly fluorine and sulfur dioxide, than the total flared annually by all miners and oil refiners in the U.S. Alongside that 13 billion cubic meters of gas is 25 million tons of wastewater laced with cancer-causing heavy metals such as cadmium.

Baotou Steel Group, which operates the Baiyun Ebo mine, has spent 500 million yuan ($75 million) with the local government to relocate five villages after seepage from the dam polluted agricultural land and drinking water.

All rare earth ores contain uranium and thorium, which could pose a danger if not disposed of responsibly.

Graphene Pro's

Graphene is a form of carbon in which the atoms form a flat sheet just one atom thick, arranged in a chicken-wire-like formation (refer above picture).

Graphene is transparent, so that electrodes made from it can be applied to the transparent organic solar cells without blocking any of the incoming light.

Graphene is flexible, like the organic solar cells themselves, so it could be part of installations that require the panel to follow the contours of a structure, such as a patterned roof. ITO, by contrast, is stiff and brittle.

Graphene exhibits good combinations of transparency and sheet resistance.

Graphene could be stacked on top of other solar panels, increasing the amount of power generated from a given area. And they could even be folded or rolled up for easy transportation.

Graphene Setback

Graphene large-scale manufacturing techniques. Graphene repels water, so typical procedures for producing an electrode on the surface by depositing the material from a solution won’t work.

Graphene electrodes unable to achieve a performance that matches conventional metal oxide (ITO) electrodes.

Conclusion

Being a leader, can't you envision this matter? Can't you see Graphene potential?

We could produce LCD screen, LED screen, touch screen devices, solar panel using Graphene.

According to Professor Andre Geim, Graphene co-Founder, our neighbouring country, Singapore produce lots of research on Graphene with about 200 research paper and USD100million research grants. South Korean by their famous industrial giant, Samsung pouring some USD300million onto Graphene research.

Rare-earth would be insignificant when Graphene shone..... And its not far away!

1. Astrologi vs Astronomi

Bolehkan Membaca Tanda-tanda Pada Orbit-orbit Bintang?

Al-Hamdulillah.

Qatadah berkata: Al-Bukhari menyatakan dalam Shahih-nya: Allah menciptakan bintang-bintang itu untuk tiga kegunaan: sebagai hiasan, sebagai penimpuk syetan dan sebagai tanda-tanda yang dijadikan rambu-rambu jalan. Barangsiapa menakwilkannya, berarti ia telah keliru dan membuang-buang waktunya serta membebani diri dengan sesuatu yang tidak diketahuinya." Shahihul Bukhari bab: tentang ilmu perbintangan (II : 420)

Ilmu perbintangan itu sendiri ada dua: Ilmu Ta-tsier yakni bahwa orbit bintang itu memiliki pengaruh terhadap alam (Astrologi), dan ilmu taysir, yakni ilmu tentang orbit-orbit bintang saja.

Ilmu ta-tsier itu sendiri ada tiga bagian:
1. Ilmu Ahawadits Wasy Syurur yakni dengan keyakinan bahwa bintang-bintang itu dengan sendirinya memberikan pengaruh dan berlaku sebagai subjek pelaku, dalam arti bintang-bintang itulah yang menciptakan pengaruh. Hukumnya adalah syirik besar, karena pelakunya mengklaim bahwa ada pencipta lain selain Allah, berarti ia musyrik dengan kemusyrikan besar. Karena ia telah menjadikan makhluk yang dibebani hukum sebagai pencipta dan pembuat hukum.

2. Mengklaim, bahwa semua bintang-bintang itu sebagai sebab yang menurut mereka dijadikan untuk mengetahui ilmu ghaib. Mereka mengambil simbol dari gerakan, perpindahan dan perubahan pada bintang-bintang tersebut. Seperti mengatakan: "Akan terjadi ini dan itu, karena bintang Anu berubah menjadi begini dan begitu. Atau si fulan akan sengsara hidupnya karena ia lahir di putaran bulan ini dan itu. Sementara orang ini akan bahagia, karena lahir di orbit bulan ini. Mereka menjadikan ilmu perbintangan itu sebagai sarana untuk mengklaim mengetahui ilmu ghaib.

Sementara mengaku mengetahui ilmu ghaib adalah kekufuran yang mengeluarkan pelakunya dari Islam. Karena Allah berfirman:

" Katakanlah:"Tidak ada seorangpun di langit dan di bumi yang mengetahui perkara yang ghaib, kecuali Allah", dan mereka tidak mengetahui bila mereka akan dibangkitkan.." (An-Naml : 65)

Ini merupakan "kata pengikat" yang paling kuat, karena menggabungkan antara kata yang menunjukkan kalimat negatif (tidak) dengan pengecualian (kecuali). Siapa saja yang mengklaim dirinya mengetahui ilmu ghaib, berarti ia telah mendustakan Al-Qur'an.

3. Dengan meyakini bahwa bintang-bintang itu menjadi sebab terjadinya kebaikan dan keburukan. Itu merupakan syirik kecil. Yakni apabila terjadi sesuatu, langsung dihubungkan kepada bintang-bintang itu. Namun hanya menghubung-hubungkannya bila telah terjadi saja.

Kaidahnya, bahwa siapa saja yang menjadikan sesuatu sebagai sebab yang tidak dijadikan oleh Allah, maka ia telah melanggar batas terhadap Allah. Seperti orang yang mencari kesembuhan dengan mengikatkan benang. Karena yang menetapkan satu sebab hanyalah Allah semata.

Misalnya dikatakan: "Saya yakin bahwa kesembuhan itu di tangan Allah. Benang ini hanyalah merupakan sarana atau sebab." Kita jawab: "Dengan ucapan itu Anda selamat dari syirik besar, namun terjerumus ke dalam syirik kecil. Karena Allah tidak menjadikan benang itu sebagai sebab kesembuhan secara zhahirnya.

Demikian juga orang yang menjadikan bintang-bintang sebagai sebab turunnya hujan, padahal kenyataannya tidaklah demikian. Dengan perbuatan itu, berarti seseorang telah melanggar kedudukan Rububiyyah, dengan menjadikan sesuatu sebagai sebab dari sesuatu yang lain, padahal Allah tidak menjadikan demikian.

Dalilnya adalah hadits Zaid bin Khalid Al-Juhani dalam riwayat Al-Bukhari dan Muslim, bahwa Zaid menceritakan: Rasulullah Shallalallahu 'alaihi wa sallam pernah shalat Shubuh bersama kami di Al-Hudaibiyyah di bekas turunnya hujan di malam sebelumnya. Usai shalat, beliau menghadap ke arah jama'ah shalat dan bertanya: "Tahukah kalian apa yang difirmankan oleh Rabb kalian?" Mereka berkata menjawab: "Allah dan Rasul-Nya lebih mengetahui." Beliau berkata: "Allah berfirman: "Di pagi hari, di antara hamba-hamba-Ku ada yang menjadi mukmin dan ada yang menjadi kafir kepada-Ku. Orang yang mengatakan: "Tadi malam turun hujan untuk kita karena karunia Allah dan rahmat-Nya," maka orang itu beriman kepadaku dan kafir kepada bintang-bintang. Adapun yang berkata: "Tadi malam turun hujan untuk kita karena bintang-bintang tersebut," maka ia telah kafir kepada-Ku dan beriman kepada bintang-bintang itu.."

Allah mengecam orang yang menisbatkan hujan tersebut kepada bintang-bintang meski dalam ruang lingkup sebab musabab.

Sementara ilmu bintang itu ada dua, ilmu ta-tsier dan ilmu taysier. Ilmu taisir sendiri ada dua:
1. Yang digunakan untuk kemaslahatan agama, ilmu ini amat perlu sekali, bahkan bila dituntut untuk mengetahui yang wajib hukumnya juga wajib, seperti untuk menunjukkan arah kiblat.

2. Yang digunakan untuk keperluan dunia. Hukumnya boleh-boleh saja. Dan inipun ada dua bagian:

Pertama, untuk mengetahui arah, seperti arah kutub utama atau selatan. Hukumnya boleh-boleh saja. Ketimbang orang harus keliling ke sana ke mari untuk mengetahui arah utara, padahal ada di sampingnya.

Firman Allah:

"Dan dengan bintang-bintang itulah mereka mendapat petunjuk." (An-Nahl : 16)

Yang kedua, untuk mengetahui waktu musim, yakni dengan mempelajari juga orbit bulan. Yang satu ini dimakruhkan oleh sebagian ulama, namun masih dibolehkan oleh yang lainnya. Forecasting the weather does not come under the heading of astrology or claiming to have knowledge of the unseen, rather it is based on physical evidence and experience, and study of the natural laws established by Allaah. The same applies to knowing the times of solar and lunar eclipses, or when there are likely to be strong winds and rainfall.

It says in Fataawa al-Lajnah al-Daa’imah: The time of solar and lunar eclipses may be known from calculating the movements of heavenly bodies, from which it may also be known whether the eclipse will be total or partial. There is nothing strange about that, because this is not a matter of the unseen for everyone, rather it is only “unseen” for those who have no knowledge of astronomy and it is not “unseen” for those who have knowledge of this science. That does not mean that solar and lunar eclipses are not among the signs of Allaah with which He instils fear in His slaves so as to bring them back to their Lord and to obedience to Him.

Forecasting the weather and predicting strong winds and storms or saying where clouds are expected to form or where rain is likely to fall is based on knowledge of the natural laws of Allaah. One who has experience of these laws may say what he expects to happen, without certain knowledge, on the basis of scientific theories or common experience, so he expects that and predicts it on the basis of likelihood, not certain knowledge, and he gets it right sometimes and gets it wrong sometimes. End quote from Fataawa al-Lajnah al-Daa’imah.

Shaykh Ibn ‘Uthaymeen (may Allaah have mercy on him) said: The one who speaks of that which may be worked out by calculations is not a fortune-teller at all, because there is no element of fortune-telling in that which may be worked out by calculations. If a person predicts a solar or lunar eclipse, this is not fortune-telling because it is worked out by calculations. If he says that the sun will set at a 20-degree angle at such and such a time, this is not knowledge of the unseen, because it is something that may be worked out by calculations, and predicting something that can be worked out by calculation, even if it is in the future, is not regarded as being knowledge of the unseen, or fortune-telling.

Is twenty-four hour weather reporting such as we have now fortune-telling?

The answer is no, because it is also based on scientific data which is describing climatic conditions, because climatic conditions have to do with precise measurements that are known to them. Thus they may predict that certain conditions are likely to produce rain or not. That is like the primitive predication that we make when we see clouds forming, and thunder and lightning and thick clouds, and we say: “It is going to rain soon.”

What matters is that what points to physical phenomena is not knowledge of the unseen, even if some of the common folk think that these things are matters of the unseen and say that believing in them is like believing in fortune-telling.

A. CONVENTIONAL

1. REAL ESTATE

REAL estate investment is popular because it is often thought of as an effective hedge against inflation. The perception is that property values are almost guaranteed to appreciate as inflation rises.

When it comes to real estate investment, it is always about location, location and location. And of course, timing and quality or type of asset also play an important role in determining the rate of return on this investment.

In Malaysia, investors have several options. One is through direct investment in physical assets, such as land or residential and commercial units. But this option will most likely require investors to come up with a huge capital expenditure.

Nevertheless, to CTLA Financial Planners Sdn Bhd managing director Mike Lee, it is just a leverage game.
“You pay only 10%, and borrow the rest,” he explains, adding that as long as interest rates remain low, the incentive to borrow and buy will be there.

Return on direct investment in physical assets can be in the form of a steady stream of net rental income, or substantial capital gains upon disposal.

But as property prices have risen tremendously over the last one year, especially in certain parts of the Klang Valley, licensed financial adviser Jeremy Tan of Standard Financial Planner Sdn Bhd (FP) says, “a detailed study is recommended before investing in one.”

Another more affordable option is real estate investment trust (REIT).

“The initial capital outlay of investing in REITs is low, with minimum required investment of around RM1,000, compared with buying a piece of property, which can cost up to 10% to 30% of the value of the asset.

“And there's no need of mortgage financing,” explains Tan. REITs are traded like an equity in the local stock market, and allow investors to participate in investment in high-profile, high-value properties for better returns.

Investors will gain through attractive dividend yields, currently averaging at around 7.5%, which seem more attractive compared with fixed deposits. By CECILIA KOK

2. FIXED DEPOSITS

IN an environment of low interest rates and rising inflation, is it still wise to keep money in fixed deposits (FDs)? Certainly, according to financial experts.

“As part of portfolio diversification, placement of funds in FDs is still mandatory. This asset class should comprise of contingency funds that can be easily accessible in financial emergencies,” SFP's Tan explains.

“As a rule of thumb, one should keep aside at least three to six months of one's income in this asset class. Apart from that, it is not advisable to place any excess funds in FDs, as the yield is lower than the inflation rate; investors should rather look at other vehicles that pay better returns than the FD and inflation rates,” Tan adds.

In Malaysia, risk-averse devotees of FDs have always regarded the instrument as “safe,” in the sense that they will not lose their capital (in nominal terms), while at the same time enjoy some interest payments from the bank. But this is a false perception, as CTLA's Lee highlights.

“Inflation can erode the value of money. And the impact can be quite bad, especially for those who keep most of their money in FDs for a prolonged period, considering the fact that they only earn an interest income of less than 3% a year, while losing, say, 10% in purchasing power at the end of each year. Compounded forward, the value of FDs will be depleted in ringgit terms,” Lee explains.

“The prudent approach is to retain in FD what one needs for emergency and the rest should be invested wisely,” Lee explains. By CECILIA KOK

3. UNIT TRUST/ MUTUAL FUNDS

FINANCIAL planners are quick to point out that there is no one-strategy that fits all investors when it comes to investing in mutual funds. A mutual fund is designed to invest a pool of investors' monies in a basket of securities be it stocks, bonds or money market instruments, depending on the fund's strategy. An investor should be mindful of his/her risk appetite and desired returns when considering the types of funds equities, fixed income or balanced to invest in, says Great Vision Advisory Group executive director Andy Tang.

Tang's recommendation for this year would be balanced funds (which comprise equities and bonds) to provide both income and modest appreciation, with an expected return of between 6% to 8%.

Meanwhile, the iFast Capital Sdn Bhd research team expects equities to outperform bonds this year and maintains its overweight recommendation for equities. iFast, which is a registered institutional unit trust adviser and distributes funds through its website Fundsupermart.com.my, says that emerging market equities funds are expected to perform well as fund inflows into these markets continue, their economic growth remains robust and valuations in these market remain attractive.

It adds that funds with exposure to North Asian markets may do better than South-East Asian markets as the latter markets saw strong performances last year and North Asian markets such as South Korea, China and Taiwan are likely to play catch up this year.

For bond fund investors, iFast suggest funds that look at the high yield and emerging market debt space which is likely to fare better than safer low-yielding global bonds. It added that investors should remain cautious on long-duration developed sovereign debt as interest rates see further increases. By JEEVA ARULAMPALAM

4. EQUITIES

THE two driving forces behind investing in equities would be to see capital appreciation and earn income through dividend. The old adage commonly passed on to novice investors is to invest in growth stocks for capital appreciation and blue-chip companies for stable dividend income.

However, Great Vision's Tang says that since equity investments are a riskier option, investors need a strong stomach to withstand market volatility.

“An investor's risk appetite needs to be based on his/her age.

The older you are, the less risks you will want to take as your investment time frame may be shorter and you do not want to lose money.

The recommended stocks for this year would be the ones that will benefit from projects earmarked under the Economic Transformation Programme (ETP) such as infrastructure and oil and gas (O&G) stocks,” says Tang.

Some of the key infrastructure projects include the mass rapid transit, highway developments and low-cost carrier terminal projects while O&G stocks are favoured as the local service providers benefit from various incentives given and contracts to be awarded under the ETP.

CIMB Research analyst Norziana Mohd Inon maintains an overweight call on the O&G sector, as it is a major beneficiary of the ETP.

“The share prices of O&G stocks in our coverage have gained 13.7% on average year-to-date compared with 0.1% for the FBM KLCI. Our portfolio has been lifted primarily by our top pick SapuraCrest (Petroleum Bhd),” she said in a report issued on Wednesday.

Aside from O&G stocks, Deutsche Bank's Asean/Malaysia equity research head Teoh Su-Yin said in a media briefing last week that plantation stocks, companies which had diversified into the region, and property stocks were the house picks this year.

The bank's overall outlook for the local market is positive, with a target of 1,790 for the benchmark FBM KLCI by year-end. The index ended higher this week by 9.93 points to 1531.82 from a week ago. By JEEVA ARULAMPALAM

5. BONDS

Direct investment in the bond market in Malaysia is currently not as accessible to retail investors as it is to institutional investors and high net worth individuals.

Most retail investors' exposure to the bond market is through their investments in unit trusts, where the minimum initial investment required for bond funds is usually RM1,000, compared with the minimum amount of RM250,000 required for direct bond investment.

“While bonds are another asset class to have as part of a diversification strategy, the amount of funds to be put in this category depends on the risk appetite of investors,” SFP's Tan says.

“One has to periodically review and rebalance one's investment portfolio. In an environment of rising interest rate, it is good to par down on investment in bonds and vice-versa,” he opines.

Interest rates and bonds have an inverse relationship.

“When inflation and interest rates heat up, bond funds will lose value. Your best investment strategy here is to cut back on these funds if you have significant exposure. Favour short-term and intermediate bond funds and sell or avoid long-term funds. The latter can get hit hard when interest rates and inflation go up,” CTLA's Lee explains.

“As a fixed-income instrument, bonds are often misunderstood by the average investor who think that these instruments are safe. But returns aside, bonds do carry risks, including the risks of default, early redemption, rating downgrade and management, among others. Hence, selection of the right bond fund is important to avoid a loss. So, investors will have to be careful and seek advice from the right professionals,” he adds. By CECILIA KOK

6. COMMODITY

Legendary investor Jim Rogers is a big-time commodity bull. His reasoning is simple: as the global economy grows, so will demand for commodities.

Over the last one year, the world has witnessed a strong rebound in the prices of commodities, especially that of crude oil and crude palm oil. Most analysts believe the prices of these commodities would continue to rise as the global demand is expected to remain strong, while production of some of these commodities would remain tight.

This is partly due to poor weather conditions and natural disasters like flood that has affected coal production in Australia and crude palm oil in South-East Asia.

Also, the weakness of the US dollar will also contribute to the increase of commodity prices.

There are several ways that investors can ride on the commodity rally this year. These include directly buying into the shares of companies involved in businesses that handle these commodities, such as plantation companies; buying into commodity-themed mutual funds; or buying into future or options.

“Most Malaysians do not have much exposure to futures and options, but these are some good investment tools for investors looking to improve their overall rate of return from their investment portfolio,” says Oriental Pacific Futures Sdn Bhd marketing director Eunice Choo.

“The beauty of futures trading is that it is a two-way market, where one can buy (long) in a bull market or sell (short) in a bear market. This means that one can either buys first and sells later, or sells first and buys back later. You can always trade in futures products, regardless of whether it is a bull or bear market,” Choo explains.

“But futures trading is a high leverage investment, so one must always assess the risks properly before entering a trade,” she warns. By CECILIA KOK

7. CURRENCIES

It's widely expected that this year will see a further strengthening of Asian currencies, including that of the ringgit, against those of developed nations. The Chinese yuan, or renminbi, in particular, will remain very much in focus, as there have been hints of up to a 5% rise against the US dollar this year. In general, there are several ways that one can invest in foreign currencies, including opening a foreign currency account with financial institutions, buying assets denominated in foreign currencies, or simply trade live in the foreign exchange market.

“One's objectives of investing in foreign currencies have to be clearly defined. Some people invest in them as savings for children who will be pursuing studies overseas, while some others do it purely for investment gains,” SFP's Tan says.

“Investment in foreign currencies has its inherent risks; the appreciation and fall of a particular currency depends on the country's economic, social and political environment. It is recommended that one seek professional advice before buying into this instrument,” he adds. By CECILIA KOK

8. EXCHANGE-TRADED FUNDS

Exchange Traded Funds (ETFs) are open-end index tracking funds or trusts that are listed and traded on the stock exchange. An ETF tracks an index, commodity or a basket of assets like an open-end fund but trades on the exchange like a stock.

“The advantage for a retail investor buying into an ETF is that it offers diversification. The fund owns a basket of securities so if a fund tracks the FBM KLCI, you will have exposure to 30 stocks instead of just one stock,” said i-VCAP Management Sdn Bhd chief executive officer Mahdzir Othman. i-VCAP is the manager of the MyETF Dow Jones Islamic Market Malaysia Titans 25.

Mahdzir added that the performance of an ETF largely depends on its underlying benchmark. This means that ETFs, as in investing in equities, will experience market volatility and the ETF's performance will be affected by the performance of its component stocks or bonds.

Local financial companies have been slow to launch ETFs in Malaysia, with only five listed on the local stock exchange. However, there is a plethora of ETFs that retail investors can access in the global markets with ETFs making up 1.5% of total daily trading on the Singapore Exchange and some 40% of daily turnover in the United States.

Mahdzir says it is cheaper to buy into ETFs than as compared with normal mutual funds, as the former is passive fund while the latter is actively managed.

MRR Consulting investment adviser and managing partner Ooi Kok Hwa says that investors pay about a 5.5% sale charge (also known as front-end load) for normal mutual funds whereas they pay a normal brokerage fee of 0.7% for ETFs. By JEEVA ARULAMPALAM

9. GOLD

Investors largely regard gold as a safe-haven asset, be it in the form of purchasing gold bullion coins or gold bars. Gold is seen as an investment tool offering long-term protection against inflation and a hedge against the US currency. But as equity markets rally and investors' risk appetites grow, the appeal for precious metals such as gold, silver and platinum as an alternative investment has somewhat softened. Gold spot price was trading above US$1,300 this week. However, investment managers have taken a longer-term view that gold price is likely to remain up alongside other commodity prices and as investors look for a long-term hedge against weakness in the US dollar, euro and Japanese's yen. They have cautioned though that prices could correct if the United States starts moving in on monetary tightening measures this year.

Aside from buying physical gold in the form of coins or bars, local investors can open up investment accounts at local banks such as Public Bank, whereby investors can buy and sell gold at daily quoted prices in ringgit using a passbook. By JEEVA ARULAMPALAM

1. ART

When it comes to investment in collectibles such as art, which include paintings, sculptures and handicrafts, luck and timing are the main determinants of the rate of return. There's no fixed rate of return, as it is a subjective matter, depending on how much the buyer is willing to pay for that particular piece of creativity.

While still at an infancy stage, art investment in Malaysia has been gaining popularity over the last 20 years. One has to note, though, that most art collectors here are in not purely for monetary gains.

But as RogueArt Sdn Bhd director Beverly Yong puts it, the “returns” on art investment are often intangible. One being the gain of aesthetic and emotional satisfaction, while knowing that one is also contributing to creativity and the cultural heritage of the country.

“If one is knowledgeable and has good access to the works of major or emerging artists, one could build a collection, which would probably increase in value over the long term.

“Buying and selling art regularly for profit certainly requires one to have knowledge, a strong network and real engagement with the scene,” Yong emphasises. By CECILIA KOK

In October last year, three bottles of Chateau Lafite 1869 vintage went under the hammer for a record price of HK$1.8mil (RM705,000) in Hong Kong. That's reportedly the world's most expensive wine ever sold in an auction, and the sellers must have been laughing all the way to the bank.

Fine wine not just any wine can be a good investment, as there is a growing global demand from increasingly discerning consumers, especially from emerging economies, who are scrambling for the “limited” production to epitomise their growing affluence or improved social status.

Fine wine has a lifespan of 50 to 100 years, Vintage Assets Pte Ltd executive director Lionel Lau says to point out the fact that investors can therefore buy and keep those prized bottles for a prolonged period and wait for the right price to sell for a handsome profit.

“This investment is more suitable for those with a medium to long-term view,” Lau explains, adding that returns can range widely from 12% to 30%, with minimum initial investment starting from 5,000 (RM24,300).

“When investing in fine wine, it is best to buy in cases of six or 12 bottles, because bottles sold in their original box can actually fetch a much higher price in the secondary market, compared with individual bottles,” Lau says.

Prices of fine wine can be tracked via what is generally regarded as the world's “de facto” wine-trading platform at the London International Vintners Exchange, or Liv-ex.

“One can be sure that the prices of fine wine will continue to rise because the limited production by reputable merchants are insufficient to meet the fast-growing global demand,” he says.

A new report released Thursday by the International Energy Agency says solar could provide a third of global energy by 2060. But there’s a giant ‘if’ attached to that rosy projection: The world’s lawmakers must adopt a broad range of policies that include incentives for early deployment, subsidizing research and development and removing non-economic barriers such as grid access and permitting.

Most importantly, countries should move away from subsidizing certain solar technologies and instead establish a carbon price, a strategy that will encourage a broader view of the energy transition, Paolo Frankl, the agency’s head of renewable energy told Bloomberg.

The IEA report builds off other analyses that have come before it and aims to provide an updated picture of solar technology trends and markets. According to the report, solar energy will be the available and make the most sense in warm and sunny countries — which is a rather obvious insight. But the population growth figures the IEA included drives home the point.

Sunnier countries, those zones around the equator, will house about 7 billion people or 80 percent of the world’s population by 2050 versus 2 billion folks who will live in cold and temperate countries that includes most of Europe, Russia and parts of China and the United States.

The report noted that in most markets solar electricity is not yet able to compete without specific incentives. However, costs have dropped enough that solar thermal electricity and solar photovoltaic electricity are competitive against oil-fueled electricity generation in sunny countries, usually to cover demand peaks, and in many islands, the report said.

Not surprisingly, the report touted the good news story about photovoltaics and its deployment throughout the world. Curiously, the author sees solar thermal electricity as complementing PV, not competing with it.
When it comes to U.S.-based utility-scale projects, that has not been the case. At least not in 2011. Several U.S. utility-scale projects have made the switch from solar thermal to PV including, Solar Millennium’s decision in October to sell its Blythe solar farm and three other projects in its pipeline to solarhybrid. The 2.25 gigawatts worth of projects will be built with solar panels and not concentrated solar power technology as originally envisioned.

Still, the IEA sees a future in solar thermal both in large utility-scale projects and even in smaller applications to support isolated or weak grids.

Nope, the Gomen didn’t give me any duit kopi… infact I’m the one who gave Gomen serious amount of tax money. Of course I would like cheaper car price but let’s be realistic for once.

All those subsidies that Gomen gave for petrol, minyak masak, gula, tepung, beras etc etc need to be financed from somewhere. Not to mention lampu jalan, gaji polis trafik, lampu traffic lights etc etc.

I figure, it is better for them to get some of it from the car industry.. coz most of us do not change cars so often anyways. Furthermore, high new car price will translate to a better 2nd hand value for our old cars. So all in all, don’t think we lose so much.

Now let’s go to the country that sell cheap cars.. like US & Qatar. In US, cars maybe cheap.. but food & petrol are expensive. You can’t have medical & dental treatment unless you have insurance. Almost everywhere you go, you must pay tips (that’s an extra 10-20%!). Qatar.. cars & petrol are cheap.. but everything else are expensive.

Though I agree that it is a bit childish to ask people to “pindah negara” everytime they complain about MY car price… it is however equally childish on the part of the complainer to keep bringing the subject up. Please be more open minded and think from macro point of view.. Don’t be so silo.

Malaysia is still a developing country. She needs all the help & support she can get. If you can’t be part of the solution, then just stop being part of the problem.

they said price of petrol in arab very cheap, why malaysia can’t give the same price? but they never study more… russia is 2nd largest oil producer in the world and Ron95 there is RM3 per litre! in Australia you need to pay RM1.20 of tax for every litre of petrol!
and many said Vios is very cheap in Thai, just about RM55k. but do you see that price of imported cars are much higher in Thai compared to Malaysia? Hyundai Tucson is RM177k in Thai but only RM139k in Malaysia. that’s almost RM40k more expensive!! don’t you guys see that Thai is protecting their CKD business? now, which country imposed higher import tax to protect their local companies?

There are many ways to improve govt income & expenditure. The opposition ‘s prudent fiscal policy lecture is widely available on the internet.
But definately not via imposing ridiculous sky high car tax on the people. Another way to put it: the real reason for the sky high tax is to protect local protong. Without it, the local jaguh kampung is straight headed towards oblivion.
Arguing for pro sky high car tax via comparisons of food, petrol, dental and medical costs doesn’t make sense too. Imagine the tremendous amount of savings the rakyat could have with much much lower global car price. Imagine further how these capital freed up could be better spent and invested by the rakyat on improving the Malaysian economy. A free liberalised economy will create much more synergy. Economic synergy will not happen on a tightly regulated economy with arbitrary sky high car tax imposed to burden the already hardworking rakyat.
What the rakyat wants is a true global car price aligned with the rest of the world with reliable quality and performance. Protong can be let off to survive on its own. If it is not capable, then it should close shop and not further burden the rakyat.
Notice the protong cyber troopers are keen to bring up this type of comparisons everytime someone complains on the sky high car tax policy.

yes, individuals may get cheaper global car, but what about the country? this will cause trade deficit, similar to Thailand in 1980s which forced the country to ban import cars!
yes, you may get cheaper vios (RM50k) but u still have much cheaper saga and viva for around RM20-40k. if you remove tax and subsidy, only those who buy vios feel great (spend 20k less) but what about those who can only afford viva & saga?.. they will need to spend RM1 extra perlitre on fuel in the long run. that will only bring more benefit to middle and upper income group while burdening the lower income group.
yes you may have more money by paying less instalment every month, but remember that fuel price hike will also increase price of everything else, including foods and the cost to build house. now u have to pay more for house instalment, more for foods, and more for petrol. so, we’re back to square one, the amount of money you saved maybe just similar to before ‘import tax removal’. how about the poor ones who drive saga & viva? they’re now becoming more stressful.
simple scenario:
let’s say you pay RM800 now for vios instalment (9 years), if remove tax and car become RM55k, instalment might drop to RM600. wow, you have RM200 extra!. BUT.. petrol now increased to RM3 perlitre, you fill up 40l every time, 4 times a month, and you’re actually paying RM160 extra for petrol now. you might say that you still have RM40 extra, but remember now electricity, foods, and houses also costs more than before. back to square one.

you may noticed that tax in Thai is far higher than Malaysia, even though Thai exports hundreds of thousand cars every year. what are they trying to protect?
if you study history of Japan, Korea and even Thailand, they banned import cars to enable their local industry to grow. we all know how terrible are korean cars in previous generation, yet they were able to sell millions of it because no foreign brand allowed in Korea. this is the true meaning of being “FORCED” to buy local brand. if you go to Korea now you can see that less than 5% of the cars are imported, and the most popular import is BMW. why not Honda & Toyota? because H & T are direct competition to Hyundai & Kia. You may wildly guess what Korean gov do about it. does it ever happen in Malaysia? you can still buy foreign brands here, u just have to pay more.
Proton was setup to enable rakyat to have their own car. the cheapest vios with ABS and airbags in Thai is about RM63k. we have saga with ABS and dual airbags, just RM45k.

Point is, how much annual oil revenue does the Fed Gov receives from Petronas which it uses to manage our country and its economy and yes, in providing the necessary “subsidies” for the needy ?
Take that, and compare with the annual tax revenue that the Fed Gov receives from the automotive industry – how significant would the latter be ? or should i say, IN-significant ? Do you really think that the automotive tax ALONE can significantly contribute in providing the necessary subsidies ???

1) i’ve already explained, tax for imported cars in thailand is far higher than Malaysia even though they do not have ‘national car’ there. Thai exported almost 900,000 cars last year, so why their import tax is still high? as i said, the main purpose of import tax is to protect country economy. if imports are much higher than exports, economy will collapse.
2) income from petronas alone is not enough to run the country. and the bad news is; our oil reserve is depleting. Malaysia is once upon a time a producer of tin and gold, but those are already exploited by british.
3) car import tax are not small amount. about 600,000 cars sold in Malaysia every year and if half of that are imports, and each imports are taxed RM20,000, it’s easily RM6bil. i believe the amount is much higher than that by including excise and sales tax on P1 & P2 too. now, how much is fuel subsidy last year? RM8bil and it’s estimated to rise to RM18bil this year due to higher crude oil price. somehow, yes.. it can be said that car import tax is being used to subsidies petrol. and without this tax, i believe fuel subsidies will also be removed.
4) i’m not trying to be funny. the reason why i mentioned the price of RON95 and Exora in singapore is because you like to take that country as example. price of fuel should be around RM3 without subsidies, or S$1.20. buy they’re paying S$2.00 due to additional tax. So you’re good at maths and science and since the general perception in school is that anyone who isn’t in the science stream is dumber than those who are, you somehow ended up in it anyway because your mom would like to avoid the embarrassment of telling other mothers that you’re in the economics class.

Then there’s the biology part where, by default, you should either be a doctor, pharmacist or something along the line, but since you’re not in the mood of cutting up people, looking at rectums, smelling blood or dealing with old people, you wonder what in the world should you do with these good results of yours. You want something which isn’t as difficult as, say, “Theoretical Physics” yet at the same time has the effect of impressing the chicks in campus by the mere mention of your major, so naturally you ended up in the school of engineering.

Indeed, while going through triple integrals and rearranging alphabets in a mathematical formula, you began to day-dream that someday you will be the next Steve Jobs, loved and revered all over the world – thanks to the gadgets and devices you designed or invented, used by millions around the world, being worshipped by throngs of cultist hipsters who are actually nerd wannabees that ended up in arts and design.

Indeed as you have guessed it by now, this article is for those of you in freshman year who still have a chance to turn back, or for that student who is currently pulling an all-nighter for that big electromagnetics exam tomorrow and somehow stumbled upon this. This is an inscription, an oracle, a prophecy of what may lie in your near future. Do continue reading but let this technological soothsayer warn you: what you read may make you a little insecure, disheartened and perhaps a bit confused. Do forge ahead young Padawan, but do it at your own peril. Now since we’re done with the cool wordy disclaimer, let’s carry on.

Move a few years forward and voila! you’ve graduated – either you end up with flying colours or repeating several papers and have to extend your studies; either way, it’s fine, as you will find out later it really doesn’t matter for the real race isn’t really about getting three point something-something; rather it’s navigating your way through countless of obstacles that you never thought of, like figuring out the exact diameter of a screw that is small and light enough for an ant to carry yet can hold things together in an earthquake.

After you went through the awkward interviews and once the hype is over, while sitting in your production line, looking at your computer screen or standing in your construction site, you began to realise several things. For one, engineering isn’t what you thought it would be; you realise that this isn’t the 80s and early 90s where engineers were the revered choice for a career path of your girlfriend’s parents. In fact, you probably began to question all those years spent on physics and maths when you learn that the dude who operates the knobs and buttons in a recording studio is called a “sound engineer”.

Here are the hard cold facts: if you’re lucky (or smart enough) you may end up in oil and gas and earn sweet amounts of money. But most of you will either end up in production lines, construction sites, R&D labs, communications, field work or maintenance and services. You began to realise that the average starting salary for an engineer here has been stagnant for more than 10 years and that teachers earn more than you do these days (for starters, at least).

Materialistic rewards
Some of you, after a couple of years, will leave your job; quite a number of you, once realising that the workload is lighter and fantasise about working half-day, will quit your job and become lousy teachers, while some may go into banking as bankers love smart people who understand maths. The clever but not so smart ones may end up in various investment and MLM (multi-level marketing) schemes because you fantasise about driving a German car. It is at this point when you realise that you’re actually Steve Wozniak and not Jobs. Everybody recognises the face of the guy doing the presentation yet nobody knows the name of the engineer that made that thing possible.

But then there are those who stay all the way; now why do they do that, you may wonder? Is it because they have got no other option, hence they’re stuck there? Probably, but perhaps they saw something that no one else saw, felt something that no one else felt or understood, experienced something that others did not – the satisfaction of making, building or doing something. The satisfaction of seeing and having taking part in the transformation of a swamp or an empty plot of land into a school, a hospital or homes where families live in. Making sure those trains arrive and leave on time so that people can commute on time and with ease.

Knowing that redesigning something, making things work better, ensuring that things are more affordable and cleaner somehow gives a sort of satisfaction that very few get to witness.

You know, it is somewhat comical when people fantasise about Harry Potter doing magic seemingly out of thin air; yet engineers do more wonders: sending information, sounds, colours and pictures by harnessing the ability of magnetic manipulation and they don’t even need to wave any wand.

You see, chances are no one will remember you and, in all honesty, if your goal is to be wealthy quickly, chances are you’re in the wrong place. Indeed, there are many engineers who made it and became wealthy but materialistic rewards are merely a by-product of a nobler goal – and that goal is to make, design or build something. Though engineers are often perceived to be cold and calculative, they are actually passionate people. Unlike poets and musicians, engineers express it not in words or melody but in the work that they do.

Engineers here are overworked and underpaid, in most cases at least, but it really isn’t that bad, honestly speaking. I once saw a documentary on bridges and at the end of it, they interviewed this old Japanese engineer who was once a part of this big suspension bridge project which became a lifeline between two cities. He ended his interview with this remark: “I brought my grandson to look at it and one of my greatest joys was to point at that great bridge and tell him that I help built that thing.”

Britain may have the most eloquently brilliant politicians in the world but they come nowhere near when compared to Germany, France and Japan.

And so I shall leave you with that.

Engineers may be overworked and underpaid but they say writers are worse off. You know what’s even sadder than that? An engineer who is also a part-time writer.

During the boom, everyone was into electronics engineering. Than Mechatronics. Now companies expect one person to be able to handle from A to Z.

I particularly agree with the pay scale of engineers. It has been stagnant for far too long. Nowadays you don't find many bright people going into engineering anymore. The new good line is finance. The money is super, work is clean, perks unbelievable, life style superb.

Engineers are a dying breed now. Any good ones are snapped immediately to work in Dubai, Australia or even US.

Wonder how Malaysia is going to keep them with a 10 years stagnant salary……

Well i started as an engineer, then a manager, then a logistician, then an IT consultant and now finally an Engineer again. It took me 15 years to understand that engineering requires no bulshit like the other professions that i have done in the past. Well as for salary i started with RM 3000/month and now i am earning RM45000/month. My only advice is dont ever work in Malaysia which are full of corrupted politicians and businessman. I have seen businessmen who change mercedes every 6 month but very reluctant to even give a RM10 pay rise. Join the brain drain engineers, cause "you are worth it"…

Worked for one and a half years now in Australia as a structural engineer am getting paid 180k rm a year. Engineers in Msia are just under appreciated. Without us the architects are nothing. funny how ppl always think the architects are the ones who design them for earthquake and knows anything and everything about a structures weakness… But the have thoroughly no fkin idea

Sun Dogs

A sun dog or sundog is a common bright circular (or symmetrical) spot on a solar halo. It is an atmospheric optical phenomenon primarily associated with the reflection or refraction of sunlight by small ice crystals making up cirrus or cirrostratus clouds. Often, two sun dogs can be seen (one on each side of the sun) simultaneously.

Sun Ghost

If the sun really close to the horizon and there are cirrus clouds in the sky, sometimes the sun can appear on both sides reflected too, thus giving the impression of three suns appearing together in the sky. A Sun ‘ghost’ is actually the color of the bright points of light created by the sun that was deflected by the crystals in high clouds.

Haloes

Like rainbows, haloes are formed around the Sun due to moisture (in this case ice crystals) being refracted from the Sun’s rays in the upper atmosphere. Sometimes two or more areas of the circle or arcs surrounding the Sun will be brighter, forming what are called Sun Dogs. Haloes can also form around the Moon, and occasionally around the brighter stars and planets like Venus.

Belt of Venus

The belt of Venus is a phenomenon that occurs during dusty evenings when a band of pinkish or brownish sky will appear between the sky and the horizon.

Incipient Clouds

Noctilucent clouds are atmospherically high clouds that refract light at dusk when the Sun has already set, illuminating the sky with no seeming light source.

Aurora Borealis

Also known in the southern hemisphere as the Aurora Australis, the Aurora Borealis are charged particles from the Sun that have reached the Earth’s upper atmosphere and become excited. Moon Bows

A rainbow is caused by the Sun shining on moisture droplets, most commonly in a post-rain atmosphere. A moon bow is much rarer, only seen at night when the moon is low and full to almost full. One popular place to see moon bows is at Cumberland Falls in Kentucky, as pictured below.

St Elmo’s Fire

This weather phenomenon is luminous plasma that appears like fire on objects, such as the masts of ships or lightning rods, in an area that is electrically charged during a thunderstorm. This occurrence was named the after St Elmo, the patron saint of sailors. St. Elmo’s Fire is created by the soft glow of an electric field generated by a continuous flow of tiny sparks.

Dust Storm or Haboob (Arabic)

A haboob is a type of intense sandstorm commonly observed in arid regions throughout the world. When this downdraft, or "downburst", reaches the ground, dry, loose sand from the desert settings is essentially blown up, creating a wall of sediment preceding the storm cloud. This wall of sand can be up to 100 km (60 miles) wide and several kilometers in elevation. At their strongest, haboob winds can travel at 35-50 km/h (20-30 mph), and they may approach with little to no warning.

Often rain is not seen at the ground level as it evaporates in the hot, dry air (a phenomenon known as virga), though on occasion when the rain does persist, the precipitation can contain a considerable quantity of dust (severe cases called "mud storms"). Years ago haboobs only roamed the southern edge of the Sahara.

Whirlwinds or Dust Devils

Though they don't have the ferocious, house-lifting winds of a tornado, dust devils can certainly look scary. These whirlwinds, essentially smaller versions of tornadoes, form when there is intense heat at the ground, which causes the air above it to rise, and winds that can cause the rising air to spin. The whirlwind picks up dust from the ground, hence its name. An even scarier relative is the fire devil, which forms over the intense heat of forest fires, pulling up ropes of fire that spin furiously above the blaze.

Fire Whirls or Fire Devils

Fire whirls (also known as fire devils or tornadoes) appear when the right combination of climactic conditions is present. Fire whirls can be spawned by other natural events such as earthquakes and thunderstorms, and can be incredibly dangerous, in some cases spinning well out of the zone of a fire itself
to cause devastation and death in a radius not even reached by heat or flame. Fire whirls have been known to be nearly a mile high, have wind speeds of over 100 miles per hour and to last for 20 or more minutes.

Sun Pillars

Sun Pillars occur when the setting sun reflects off high, icy clouds at different layers. It creates a pillar of light that reaches high into the sky. It is also possible to see moon pillars.

Diamond Dust

Linked closely to haloes, diamond dust is a fog made of frozen droplets.

Red Rain, Yellow Rain and other Colored Rain

Red rain is caused by dust or sand that has blown into the atmosphere and is carried by the wind to great distances eventually mixed with rain clouds and gives color to the rain itself. Red rain in Europe is usually colored by the dust that is carried across the continent comes from Saharan sand storms. Other colored rain that can occur due to other objects such as : pollen could make a yellow rain, dust from coal mines could create a black rain, dust and even some rain could make white milk.

Non-aqueous Rain (Raining Cats and Dogs)

Rare and yet real, cases exist of rains of animals instead of water. This has occurred occasionally throughout history, from the Biblical times up to recent history. Meteorologists are still unsure of the cause. Tornado on the water can turn around and bring water, and whatever is therein, into the clouds. It is suspected that strong winds can carry a load a long distance.

Katabatic Winds

Kabatic Winds are winds that carry dense air from a higher elevation to a lower elevation due to gravity. They are known locally as the Santa Ana (southern California), the Mistral (Mediterranean), the Bora (the Adriatic Sea), Oroshi (Japan), Pitaraq (Greenland), and the Williwaw (Tierra del Fuego). The Williwaw and winds traveling over the Antarctic are particularly hazardous, blowing over 100 knots at times.

Green Ray

Also known as the Green Flash. This occurs very briefly before total sunset and after sunrise. It appears as a green flash above the sun that lasts very briefly, generally only a few moments. It is caused by refraction of light in the atmosphere.

Mirages

A mirage creates the illusion of water on a dry highway on a hot summer day. Mirages occur when light is refracted to produce an image of an object or the sky where it is not. It is most commonly seen on hot surfaces, such as the pavement or a desert.

Ball Lightning

This is a very rare phenomenon that involves ball-shaped lightning that moves much slower than normal lightning. It has been reported to be as large as eight feet in diameter and can cause great damage. There are reports of ball lightning destroying whole buildings.

Sprites, Jets, and Elves

All refer to a phenomena that occurs in the upper atmosphere around thunderstorms. They appear as cones, glows and discharges. They were only discovered last century, because of their placement and their very brief life-span (they last less than a second).

Snow Rollers:

Snow rollers, are snow balls formed naturally by strong winds blowing across a flat, snow covered field. Three conditions have to occur for Snow rollers to occur: The ground must be icy or be covered with a snow crust. Winds must be strong and gusty. A wet snowfall of at least a couple of inches.

Once a snow roller is formed the wind gets it to roll, collecting snow as it moves, in some cases even creating tracks of bare ground. The appearance of a snow roller resembles a scaled down version of those large rolled hay bails, only made of snow.

Ice Fall / Bomb

Many people have experienced Hailstorms, but rarelyhave they encountered hail or ice lumps larger than a softball (record weighed 80 pounds). Even more mysterious are giant boulders, even when there are no clouds in the sky. Some events are recorded as falling from a plane, but the cause is not known.

Giant Hailstones

A hailstorm is precipitation in the form of balls or lumps of clear ice and compact snow. It is not known for sure how hailstones form and grow. We do know that they are spherical or irregularly spherical and usually vary in diameter up to 1/2 in. (1.3 cm); in rare cases hailstones having diameters up to 5 in. (12.7 cm) have been observed. Hail causes much damage and injury to crops, livestock, property, and airplanes.

Supercell

Going purely by the name, Supercell sounds as cool as it is. It is the name given to a continuously rotating updraft deep within a severe thunderstorm (a mesocyclone) and looks downright scary.

Sea Monster or Spinning Water

A small whirlwind, usually called the devil water, can be formed over warm water, it brings water to the top and forms a channel on the surface of the water.The "Water Devil" can spin irregular, sometimes making a hissing sound and bubble like. This plus the noise sound form a long neck could give the impression that there are sea monsters.

Fire Rainbow

A fire rainbow is an extremely rare phenomenon that occurs only when the sun is high allowing its light to pass through high-altitude cirrus clouds with a high content of ice crystals.

Gravity Wave (clouds)

Gravity waves are waves in the sky not the water. These seldom seen gravity waves are caused when air is displaced in the vertical plain, usually as a result of updrafts coming off the mountains or during thunderstorms.

Virga

Virga is when ice crystals in clouds fall, but evaporate before hitting the ground. They appear as trails from clouds reaching for the surface, sometimes giving the cloud a jellyfish-like appearance.

Lenticular Clouds

Lenticular clouds are masses of cloud with strong internal uplift that can drive a motorless flyer to high elevations.Their shape is quite often mistaken for a mysterious flying object or the artificial cover for one.Generally, lenticular clouds are formed as wind speeds up while moving around a large land object such as a mountain.

Pyrocumulus Clouds

Procumulus Clouds are a heat related phenomenon, they form from the fast and intense heating of an area to create convecture, which in turn creates a cumulous cloud. Volcanoes, forest fires, and nuclear explosion (in the form of a mushroom cloud) are all prime causes of pyrocumulus clouds.

Colored Moons

Due to different atmospheric issues, the moon will occasionally appear tinged with a color, such as blue, orange, or red. Excess smoke, dust, and eclipses can cause the moon to change color.

Blue Moon

We think of the blue moon as two moons occurring in one month. But the moon seldom actually looks blue. Forest fires and volcanic eruptions can shoot ash and soot into the atmosphere where it will mix with water droplets. This mixture can be carried by the wind thousands of miles around the world and sometimes refract light of the moon and make it look bluish.

Persoalan sama ada Imam Syafii pernah atau tidak pernah mewajibkan zakat pendapatan bukanlah pokok persoalan dalam kewajipan membayar zakat pendapatan. Saya tidak pasti sama ada saudara seorang ahli akademik atau tidak, tetapi di kalangan para fuqaha dan ulama termasuk di Malaysia, persoalan fiqh perlu dilihat secara sangat kritis dan tidak disempitkan dengan aliran mana-mana mazhab. Dalam ilmu usul fiqh (ilmu yang membahaskan asas pembentukan hukum), di samping al-Quran, Sunnah, Ijmak dan Qiyas, terdapat satu komponen penting yang menentukan pembentukan hukum iaitu maslahat.

Dalam konteks kewajipan zakat, adalah sangat mudah difahami bahawa pada zaman awal Islam di mana aktiviti ekonomi yang utama ialah pertanian dan perniagaan, maka hukum yang disyariatkan juga sesuai dengan keadaan pada masa tersebut. Hakikatnya, pertanian dan pertanian ialah sumber utama pendapatan pada masa itu. Namun, masa beredar. Sesuai dengan satu kaedah fiqh yang menyebutkan bahawa: “tidak dinafikan bahawa hukum -terutamanya ijtihad- boleh berubah dengan perubahan masa dan tempat” dan disesuaikan dengan usul fiqh yang menitikberatkan aspek maslahat, maka sumber yang boleh dikenakan zakat juga disesuaikan dengan keadaan semasa. Pada masa ini golongan petani dan peniaga memang ramai, tetapi golongan yang menjalankan aktiviti perkhidmatan juga sangat ramai. Jika pada zaman dahulu pertanian dan perniagaan dikenakan zakat kerana ia merupakan sumber pendapatan utama, maka adalah sewajarnya apa-apa sumber pendapatan pada masa ini juga dikenakan zakat. Perkara ini disebut sebagai ‘illah iaitu komponen penting yang digunakan dalam melakukan Qiyas.

Kita lihat pada matlamat zakat yang secara tersirat memberikan manfaat kepada kedua-dua pihak: pemberi dan penerima. Zakat dapat memurnikan hati pemberi dan memberikan keberkatan pada hartanya. Zakat juga dapat mengeluarkan golongan yang miskin dan lain-lain asnaf daripada bebanan masalah yang menghambat mereka. Baiklah, apabila sumber pendapatan utama umat Islam telah berubah dari bentuk perniagaan & pertanian kepada perkhidmatan bergaji tetap, dan dalam masa yang sama kita masih mahu memakai pemahaman lama tentang kewajipan zakat, maka sudah pasti akan berlaku kepincangan yang besar dalam sistem sosial umat Islam. Yang kaya terus melipatgandakan harta manakala dana untuk membantu golongan miskin dll akan terus menyusut menyebabkan jurang antara kaya dan miskin semakin melebar. Kita perlu ingat bahawa antara peranan zakat ialah merapatkan jurang perbezaan ini.

Mewajibkan zakat pendapatan merupakan satu tindakan penting dalam memelihara maslahat umat Islam dan ia bukanlah idea mana-mana pihak yang tamak mahu memandai-mandai atas kepentingan duniawi. Malah, kewajipan zakat pendapatan ini dibincangkan dengan sangat kritis oleh para fuqaha di seluruh dunia. Mereka bukan mahu memenuhkan periuk nasi masing-masing, sebaliknya sangat prihatin dengan nasib golongan asnaf zakat yang merintih di seluruh dunia. Tidak perlulah kita berasa risau jika gaji yang diterima tidak mencukupi untuk keperluan bulanan (apatah lagi jika perlu dikorek pula simpanan yang ada). Sistem zakat tidak menzalimi umat Islam. Malah bertujuan untuk membantu umat Islam. Semakin lama saya mendalami hukum zakat, makin saya kagum dengan kebijaksanaan Allah s.w.t. Apa tidaknya, zakat hanya diwajibkan ke atas orang yang hartanya melebihi keperluan. Sebaliknya, jika apa yang ada tidak mencukupi, kita pula dibenarkan untuk memohon zakat. Jika harta kita berlebih2an maka kita diwajibkan memberi lalu kita bersyukur kerana dilimpahi rezeki yang luas dan kita tidak perlu meminta-minta. Tetapi jika kita perlu mengharap bantuan, kita juga akan bersyukur kerana ada tempat untuk kita memohon bantuan.

3. Memaksa Orang Menerima Pandangan

Mereka memaksa orang lain untuk menerima pandangan mereka. Dan ini diperkuatkan pula dengan petikan-petikan ayat-ayat Al-Quran bagi menguatkan kata-kata mereka.

Paling tak boleh blah, diorang tuduh dan label orang yang tak terima pandangan diorang sebagai GOYYIM dan BINATANG TERNAK!!

How To Buy A House

Buying a house or property/condominium is one big financial commitment (for residency or rental/investment purposes) requires much thought and planning. I am writing this post based on my own personal experience for a friend who asked me what are things to lookout and do when buying a property.

Here is the checklist that i could think of right now.

1. Prepare cash..$$$$

Generally, you need to find at least 10% cash for the property you are interested so that you can proceed to sign the Sale & Purchase agreement. The deposit are hold in escrow by the lawyers and forfeit-able if you suddenly have cold feet and decided not to buy the property. The other way is true also; If a seller suddenly decided not to buy, he will be penalized also and forced to pay a sum to the disappointed buyer. I cannot remember what is the penalized fee though? Anyone knows do let me know.

The 10% deposit usually applies to secondary market sales or sub sale aka buying a second-hand house. New or yet to be developed properties may require less to encourage consumers to rush in to snap it up like hot cakes. Thus, it is very common in KL or Penang to see that a newly opened development being sold out in a single day!! Like buying vegetable..lol

2. Find a bank to loan you the remaining 90% or less of the property's value

Well, i read from the website that is very common that a buyer might do some back-door transaction with the seller to mark-up the properties prices so that the buyer could lend more $$$ to do renovations, etc. To prevent excessive mark-up, the bank will send a independent property valuer agent(usually the fees will be borne by the bank) to judge the "real" value of the property.

So if the agent found the property value to be lower than market value, thus in theory the bank will only lend 90% of the lower value. But as of now , i have yet heard of this fact because banks want to loan you more so that they can earn more interest from you. (provided you have good credit scores) :P

Another cost saving thing to watch out for while searching for a bank loan is to be hardworking to look around for the loan rates. Even though, in general most banks offer more or less the same packages if you look at the brochure or at their website but there is a way to get lower rates.

The answer is to seek out housing loan executives. Usually they are very very helpful to process your loan (they earn a good living on commissions), and if you ask for a lower special rate, (rates that are not advertised/official) they can give it to you pending your credit checks and also approval from their higher management. Housing loans are a very ultra competitive business among banks so these lower rates are very common "back-door" practices to avoid upsetting the other banks that belong in a specific cartel.

So remember to always ask for lower rates!!!

Once you got the offer letter of loan from the banks, you can take your sweet time to pick to sign your autograph.

3. MRTA is not compulsory by law

Mati Rumah Tetap Ada (MRTA) or in english is "if you die, you still own the house" is not compulsory by law even though you constantly getting pushed to buy it. If the banks requires some guarantee, you can always pledge your personal life insurance to the bank as collateral. This is what my insurance guru told me although I am not sure whether it is really feasible. Nevertheless, there are some banks that either force you to buy or can waive this requirement. MRTA are redeemable when you sell the property or can be transferred from an old property to a new one.

4. CTOS & CRIS (not Kris, my name)

Malaysia credit rating agency. So if you always have late payment or just pay minimum credit payment, these 2 agencies will lower your personal credit rating thus making you harder to get a loan. These agency will have information on all your previous and outstanding loans and also credit card spending behaviour. Typical a good score will enable you to loan up a higher amount. I did saw my own score and it was in the lower 30s, which means i am a good debtor. (agents were surprised to see my rating)..as typically the average score for any consumer is around 60.

5. Get a lawyer

The lawyer will basically do 2 agreements and it is not necessary that the same lawyer do both. The contracts are :

a) Sale & Purchase between buyer and seller (Note that buyer and seller can use the same lawyer (share costs) or each choose a different one)

b) Loan agreement between buyer and banker

Since lawyers are considered professional like engineers , their fees are non-negotiate able unless you are buddy buddy with him/her. The bulk of payment concerning this S&P agreement is certainly regarding the stamp duties that is directly proportionate to your property prices. So don't be shocked when the lawyer demand a princely sum to do your S&P agreement, which usually includes the stamping fee.

The lawyers will perform ownership checks, ensuring the sellers are not bankrupt, all payments concerning the property are being paid to avoid you from getting the craps when the property is transferred to your name. There are also issues concerning strata titles (for condominium/apartment property) and also bumi-putera lots. (big topic here)

The lawyer fees for the loan agreement contract are also non-negotiable. The lawyer has up to 3 months to process this, as the loan offer letter is only valid for 3 months after issuance.

6. Get money out of EPF's 2nd account to pay loan principal

For virgin property buyers, the initial amount reimburse by EPF will be directly to your housing loan account. After that , you can get your money out every 6 months and you will get a cheque instead. You need to provide EPF initially with the S&P, identity card and loan account number.

7. Enjoy your new property.

of Proton and other Local Carmaker

A. PROTECTIONISM OF PROTON by CheDet

1. Recently someone complained that Malaysians have to pay high prices for cars because the Government is protecting Proton.

2. Actually the high price for imported cars was fixed before Proton to reduce gas-guzzling cars from being imported. Thus cars with big engines are taxed (import duty) by 300%. Other cars are also heavily taxed to reduce import of petrol.

3. When Proton was introduced the price fixed was lower due to lower tax being charged. The buyers profited from the lower price so that those who could not buy a car before could now buy a Proton car.

4. Still the tax on Proton yielded 18 billion Ringgit in government revenue over a 10-year period. This is simply because more people bought Protons who before could not afford to own a car. The rapid growth in the ownership of cars is due to the cheapness of the Proton.

5. Today Proton's share of the market is less than 30%. A lot of foreign cars are being imported because Malaysians are richer now. Despite Mercedes and BMW costing three times more in Malaysia than in Europe, Malaysia is one of the best markets for these huge luxury cars. They buy these cars because they just like them and do not mind the high price. It has nothing to do with protecting Proton.

6. Is the Government doing something that other Governments are not doing? I list below the measures taken by other countries to protect their economy.

7. Singapore : Buyers have to pay a high price for a certificate to import cars.

8. In America US$74 billion in Government funds were used to bail out automotive companies. (Without this bailout General Motors would close down. Americans would have to buy foreign-made cars).

9. France: Government doled out billions to automakers to keep the automotive industries alive.

10. Spain : Interest free loans were made available by the Government to support local industries.

11. UK : Millions of pounds were given to businesses and banks to prevent them from closing down. Still all British car companies have closed down.

12. Germany : Financial incentives were given to scrap older cars so that people can buy new cars.

13. Italy : Subsidies are given for purchase of "green scooter".

14. Russia : Direct subsidies are given to auto companies and tariffs imposed on used cars to protect industry.

15. China, South Korea : Policies and subsidies are used to protect local automakers.

16. Russia, India and Turkey use import tariffs to protect local industries.

17. China, India, Russia, Vietnam, Ecuador, Argentina, Brazil all have tariff barriers. The United States imposed 35% tariff on China-made tyres.

18. The G20 resolved against protectionism but all of them provide protection in various forms for their businesses, contracts and products.

19. So, is it wrong for Malaysia to protect local industries? Actually our protection is minimal.

20. We believe in competition but we are up against countries which protect their industries against foreign products. In Europe standards are raised every year to keep foreign cars out of their markets. The cars and other products we import are cheap because of subsidies and protection by their countries.

21. In America, if there is a slight defect in the product, selling the product in the US market would be stopped. Because one person got rashes from wearing gloves made of Malaysian rubber, all Malaysian gloves were banned.

22. Millions of Toyota's hybrid cars were recalled because one car had defective brakes.

23. We can close down Proton and buy only foreign-made cars. Roughly 50,000 people would be thrown out of work. Their families would be deprived of a bread-winner. Many other industries including component suppliers, transport companies etc will suffer. Economic growth would be effected.

24. If we think that without the need to protect Proton, foreign cars would be cheaper, we are wrong. Without the tax on foreign cars and on Proton cars, Government revenue would be smaller. There would be little money to finance infrastructure, universities, scholarships etc. Generally standards of living could decline. So the Government will have to continue with high taxes for imported cars. It is not Proton which is causing foreign cars to sell at high prices.

B. AUTOMAKERS ARROGANCE
Consumers fall victim to export-oriented strategy

Have you ever heard about some domestic consumers who import Korean-made cars from the United States? What’s the benefit of such a purchase? They can buy Hyundai or Kia models at cheaper prices even though they have to pay import duties.

More and more Koreans may turn to this odd buying behavior to save money. Bringing in exported Korean cars has stemmed from local automakers’ misguided price policy in which they sell cars cheaper abroad than at home. It is somewhat understandable that car manufacturers have long exported cars at discounted prices to maintain their competitive edge against global giants.

However, it is no exaggeration to say that local motorists have paid virtual subsidies to Hyundai Motor, Kia Motors and other carmakers to help them export more. But now, the time has come to terminate the dual price system that discriminates against Korean consumers. Actually, the nation’s two leading carmakers ― Hyundai and its affiliate Kia ― are expected to continue their record-breaking earnings spree this year, boosted by their brisk sales at home and abroad.

It seems that the two firms have grown more arrogant than ever because of their strongest-ever performances. They are not willing to listen carefully to public concerns that they have taken domestic consumers hostage for maximizing their profit. In fact, Hyundai and Kia have long dominated the Korean car market, making little room for consumer choice.

Local consumers have also been complaining about the quality of cars. It has been no secret that the automakers export better quality cars equipped with up-to-date airbags and other safety gadgets. They usually install six airbags in each car to be exported to the U.S., while most cars for domestic use have only two airbags.

The carmakers’ strategy apparently sends a wrong message that safety of overseas buyers is more important than that of local drivers. What baloney! The story does not stop here. The Korean firms provide a much longer period of warrantee services for overseas buyers than domestic ones.

No one can deny that the auto companies have tenaciously stuck to the outdated policy of export promotion that was prevalent in the 1970s and 80s even at the cost of local consumers’ interests. It goes without saying that Hyundai and Kia cannot become the word top-class automaker by keeping the anachronistic strategy.

They should learn a lesson from the crisis of Toyota that lost consumer confidence due to massive recalls of cars with serious defects worldwide in 2009. Executives of the Korean makers must realize that their arrogance over consumers will only invite woes. We call on them to shift their focus from export first to consumer first. They also need to share their profits with domestic consumers ― the driving force behind what Hyundai and Kia are today ― by supplying cheaper cars with better quality.

ASTRO Monopolize Satellite TV for 20 Years

MENGENAI KENAIKAN HARGA LANGGANAN PAKEJ ASTRO
DAN KUALITI PERKHIDMATAN ASTRO

Merujuk kepada pelbagai kenyataan media mengenai kenaikan harga dan kualiti perkhidmatan Astro, PPIM difahamkan lesen penyiaran tv berbayar menggunakan medium satelit telah diberikan secara EKSKLUSIF kepada Astro selama dua puluh (20) tahun sehingga 2017. Ini bermakna Astro mempunyai MONOPOLI untuk mengutip hasil langganan daripada semua pengguna termasuk premis perniagaan untuk membiayai operasinya.

Dengan monopoli yang diberikan begitu lama, sesungguhnya Astro tidak mempunyai persaingan bagi perniagaan tv satelit berbayar. Malangnya, sejak lebih 10 tahun yang lalu, pengguna dihelah untuk membayar langganan bulanan dan pada masa yang sama dipaksa menyaksikan iklan TV komersil.

Semasa permulaan siaran Astro, pelanggan dijanjikan siaran TV berbayar dan tidak mempunyai iklan. Kini, PPIM menerima banyak aduan daripada pelanggan siaran TV berbayar Astro tidak kurang bezanya dengan siaran TV percuma akibat pelambakan iklan TV yang dianggarkan bernilai sekitar RM200 juta setahun.

Selain itu, banyak lagi kelemahan yang menjadi rungutan pengguna sebagaimana tersenarai di bawah:-

1. Semasa hari hujan, semua siaran tidak dapat ditonton;
2. Gangguan siaran semasa hujan tidak digantirugi oleh Astro kepada Pengguna;
3. Yuran sambungan RM 20 tidak munasabah kerana bukannya kerja berat menggunakan spanar atau kerja yang sukar;
4. Disebabkan kegagalan Astro berfungsi semasa hujan, antara fungsi utama TV menyampaikan berita telah gagal kerana semua TV menggunakan siaran Astro sekarang;
5. Jika pelanggan ke luar Negara dan tidak membayar bil, maka Astro masih mengenakan bayaran dan perlu membayar fee kepada bulan-bulan yang tidak ditonton langsung;
6. Hampir semua hak siaran sukan rakyat seperti Badminton dan juga bolasepak telah dibeli oleh Astro dan rakyat yang tidak menyewa Astro tidak boleh menikmatinya walaupun sebelum ini acara sukan tersebut dapat ditontoni secara percuma ini;
7. Ramai pengguna merungut pihak Astro memaksa mereka untuk mengambil pakej baru yang lebih mahal apabila decoder/kad mempunyai masalah;
8. Pada saluran tertentu di Astro, dilihat ada usaha menyebarkan agama lain di sedangkan perkara ini tidak dibenarkan sebagaimana termaktub di dalam Perlembagaan Persekutuan yang agama rasminya adalah Islam.

PPIM berpendapat tiada sebarang sebab munasabah yang boleh dibawa oleh pihak Astro bagi memberi justifikasi menaikkan harga sewenang-wenangnya kerana keuntungan Astro sebagai pengusaha MONOPOLI tv satelit kini meningkat daripada RM650 juta pada 2009 kepada RM800 juta pada 2010.

Sebarang kenaikan atau ‘price adjustment’ yang ditagih Astro ketika ini dilihat sebagai satu usaha yang berlawanan dengan usaha kerajaan menjaga kepentingan pengguna & rakyat.

PPIM percaya sekiranya pihak Kerajaan melalui Khazanah Nasional mampu melaksanakan moratorium kenaikan harga tol konsesi PLUS selama lima (5) tahun, pihak Astro yang 30% dimiliki kerajaan melalui Khazanah juga boleh berbuat demikian demi meringankan beban kos kehidupan rakyat.

Oleh yang demikian, PPIM menggesa dan menuntut:

1. Astro tidak menaikkan harga pakej langganan dan sebaliknya menurunkan kadar langganan oleh sebab KONSESI monopoli yang dinikmati selama ini sehingga 2017;

2. Astro mempertimbangkan cadangan PPIM untuk menawarkan pakej prepaid kepada pelanggannya tanpa mengenakan caj langganan yang tidak munasabah;

3. Astro mengambil tindakan segera memperbetulkan polisi dan kadar penyambungan semula dan menambahbaik kualiti perkhidmatan terutama apabila hujan;

4. Kementerian Penerangan (KPKK) dan Suruhanjaya Komunikasi & Multimedia (SKMM):
a. Mengkaji semula kebenaran yang diberikan kepada Astro menyiarkan iklan TV selama sepuluh (10) minit setiap jam dan seterusnya menghadkan atau tidak membenarkan siaran iklan TV;
b. Memastikan Astro tidak memonopoli secara eksklusif hak siaran rancangan atau acara yang diminati rakyat;
c. Pengguna yang tidak melanggan Astro masih dapat menonton rancangan atau acara yang diminati secara percuma.

5. Pihak KPKK dan SKMM dengan nasihat JAKIM dan Majlis Keselamatan Negara mengkaji semula syarat dan terma lesen yang diberikan kepada Astro memandangkan terdapat beberapa keadaan yang boleh menjejaskan keselamatan Negara dan juga menafikan matlamat utama stesen penyiaran TV.

PPIM menyeru semua pelanggan dan pengguna beramai-ramai menghantar isyarat bahawa kita semua jemu ditipu dan diambil mudah! Kali ini kita mahu hak pengguna menjadi asas dan rujukan utama sebarang keputusan yang dibuat oleh mana-mana pihak.

Bersatulah pengguna dan marilah kita memboikot ASTRO sehingga mereka akur kepada tuntutan-tuntuntan tersebut di atas.

“All we want is a chance to speak up, give us that much rein and accept that we have tried, we are not trying to make people unhappy, we just want to be happy,” he said.

I believe the morons opposing Seksualiti Merdeka on the grounds that it "promotes the LGBT lifestyle" are really frustrated closet-homosexuals who can't come out because they are in public office or something. Milan scored in the first minute and the last minute, to bookend a game otherwise dominated by Barcelona.
Pep Guardiola used Sergio Busquets and Javier Mascherano at the back, with Seydou Keita in the holding role, in the usual 4-3-3.

Max Allegri was without Zlatan Ibrahimovic, so Pato started upfront, supported by Antonio Cassano. Antonio Nocerino and Gianluca Zambrotta also started.

This is a strange game to analyse – how well did Milan’s tactics work? Certain aspects – the narrowness, the formation, exploiting Barca’s lack of pace at the back – worked well, but Barcelona probably could have put the game beyond them. With Guardiola using roughly his usual side and tactics (the centre-backs aside, an issue covered a lot recently), let’s look at Milan’s tactics instead.

What went well for Milan

1 The formation and overall structure
Italian clubs’ inherent narrowness cost them dear in the Champions League last season, but here it seemed to help Milan. The last side to win at the Camp Nou was Hercules, who used a flattish diamond midfield on the way to an impressive 2-0 victory, and after Milan generally competed well here, other managers might consider using a diamond. The back four played reasonably narrow, the three-man midfield sat deep and tried to prevent Barca playing between the lines, whilst the trequartista (Kevin Prince Boateng, and later Clarence Seedorf) played in a zone that occupied Keita, which sometimes meant Barca were unable to go back to him to retain the ball.

2 Dealing with Lionel Messi
OK, he was still a threat. But Messi thumping the floor when he was denied a goal by the outstanding Alessandro Nesta summed up a frustrating night for the Argentine. Milan’s strategy was, frankly, not to pay too much attention to him: they kept their shape. Of course, they closed him down when he got the ball, but the three-man midfield meant that Messi couldn’t find much space to come deep and receive the ball in that zone. He’s also seemingly been discouraged from coming too deep, as he tended to do around the time of the Copa del Rey final, which meant Barca simply played in front of the opposition. It might be that you can’t get too tight to Messi – he beats you anyway. (He still created a goal, but that was from a strange situation in the right-back position.)

3 Dealing with Dani Alves
What’s the disadvantage of playing a 4-3-1-2 against Barca – or any side? You’re leaving their full-backs free. But Milan were happy to do that, and left Alves to Zambrotta, Pedro allowed to wander into the middle. For some reason, Alves never went down the outside, with Zambrotta showing him inside – onto Zambrotta’s stronger foot (although both are pretty good) – and Alves’ weaker side. As a result, Barca were too narrow and were unable to stretch the play.

4 Pressing later on
Milan sat relatively deep in the first half – not too deep – but when they went behind on 50 minutes, Allegri altered his tactics and pushed higher up, playing more proactively and forcing the issue. Barca were still the better side in that period, but it demonstrated flexibility and an urgency to win the ball – there’s no point sitting back and soaking up pressure if you’e behind.

5 Playing out from the back
As Pato’s early strike showed, Milan were likely to get joy by using pace up against Barca’s centre-backs. Guardiola’s side generally play a high line, but Busquets and Mascherano were likely to be a little tentative and retreat towards their own goal. Therefore, particularly in the second half, it was notable that Christian Abbiati, Nesta and Thiago Silva played short goal-kicks from the back, trying to prompt Barca’s front three forward – and in turn, the rest of the team -leaving space in behind.

6 Logical goals
Milan had two likely sources of goals – (a) pace through the middle and (b) set-pieces. Both worked.

What went badly for Milan

1 Too many free-kicks conceded
A team with Mark van Bommel in the holding role is always likely to be vulnerable here, but Milan dived in too much and made tackles they didn’t need to. Nesta conceded fouls cleverly, when there was a direct threat on goal – but the midfielders made silly tackles, and van Bommel picking up a booking after 18 minutes for dissent was sheer stupidity when he was up against Messi, Xavi Hernandez and Andres Iniesta for the rest of the game. Typically, he managed to evade another card – but he didn’t make a single tackle in the game for fear of a dismissal, and that hampered Milan.

2 Too many long shots conceded
Xavi is not renowned for long-range shooting, but he had three long range efforts because there was space either side of the Milan ‘three’ in midfield. One, towards the end of the first half, was very close.

3 No clear out-ball
Barca were vulnerable at the back, particularly to direct attacks, but Milan weren’t clever enough with the positioning of their forwards. It wasn’t quite clear what Cassano’s role in the side was – a deep-lying forward, yes, but what is that player meant to do when his side has no possession and barely gets into the opposition half? He could have come wider, or deeper, to drag Mascherano further out of position and to instigate an attack. Alternatively, Urby Emmanuelson could have been fielded from the start (which was expected amongst the Italian media before the game) to provide pace down the flank. Barca should have been tested more on the break.

4 Tiredness
Cassano tired, Pato tired and Seedorf tired. Only the right hand side didn’t suffer, and it was notable that both Ignazio Abate and Antonio Nocerino had the legs to pressure Barca in the left-back zone late on. Nocerino’s persistence resulted in the corner for the goal.

1. Kedutaan Besar Malaysia di Jakarta terus jadi sasaran demonstrasi

JAKARTA: Kedutaan Besar Malaysia di Jakarta terus menjadi sasaran demonstrasi kumpulan penduduk Indonesia berhubung isu sempadan Malaysia-Indonesia dan hari ini pula dari kumpulan Laskar Merah Putih (LMP).

Kira-kira 70 anggota LMP yang berpakaian seragam celoreng mengadakan tunjuk perasaan selama satu setengah jam dengan membawa sepanduk dan berucap mengecam Malaysia, yang didakwa mengambil secara haram lebih 1,000 hektar tanah di Kalimantan Barat, yang bersempadan dengan Sarawak.

Anggota polis yang berkawal di depan bangunan kedutaan besar itu menghalang mereka daripada memasang bendera di pintu pagar dan menyekat kumpulan itu daripada mendekati pintu pagar.

Sebelum bersurai, kumpulan yang dipimpin oleh Adek Erfil Manurung itu menyerahkan nota pernyataan pendirian mereka kepada seorang kakitangan di pos pengawal kedutaan itu dan mengumumkan bahawa mereka akan mengadakan satu lagi demonstrasi berskala besar di situ pada 28 Oktober ini.

Pernyataan itu antara lainnya meminta Kerajaan Malaysia menyelesaikan isu pertikaian sempadan antara kedua-dua negara.

Isu sempadan itu ditimbulkan Timbalan Ketua Suruhanjaya 1, Dewan Perwakilan Rakyat, Tb Hasanuddin, hujung minggu lalu yang mendakwa Indonesia kehilangan 1,400 hektar di Camar Bulan serta 800 meter garis pantai di Tanjung Datu, kononnya diambil secara haram Malaysia.

Bagaimanapun, empat menteri Indonesia, termasuk Menteri Luar, Marty Natalegawa, dilaporkan menafikan dakwaan itu kerana ia tidak berasas.
Ini adalah hari kedua berturut-turut demonstrasi diadakan di hadapan Kedutaan Besar Malaysia berkaitan isu itu, setelah kumpulan Forum Betawi Rempug (FBR) yang membawa anggota berjumlah 650 orang berbuat demikian semalam.

Demonstrasi semalam menjadi kecoh apabila apabila penunjuk perasaan melempar batu, kayu dan buluh ke dalam kawasan kedutaan besar itu kerana marah dihalang oleh pihak polis daripada memasang bendera FBR di pintu pagar bangunan pejabat kedutaan itu.

Perbuatan mereka mengakibatkan beberapa harta kedutaan rosak dan sembilan anggota polis Indonesia mengalami luka kerana terkena benda yang dilemparkan itu. - BERNAMA

TRIBUN-TIMUR.COM, MAKASSAR - Markas Daerah Forum Bersama Laskar Merah Putih (LMP) Sulsel mengancam akan membubarkan pelaksanaan musyawarah daerah (musda) LMP versi Ketua Umum Adek Erfil Manurung di Hotel Denpasar, Makassar, 28 September 2011 nanti.

Ketua Markas Daerah Forum Bersama LMP Sulsel periode 2010-2015, Andi Noer Aliem menegaskan bahwa segala bentuk kegiatan yang dilakukan oleh kelompok LMP versi Adek Erfil Manurung di Sulsel adalah ilegal.

LMP Sulsel versi kepemimpinan Ketua Umum Adek Erfil dipegang oleh Gajamada Harding. Di dalam kepengurusan LMP Sulsel periode 2010-2015, ia tercatat sebagai Sekretaris LMP Sulsel. Dengan adanya ancaman tersebut, Musda LMP Sulsel pun terancam rusuh.

"Kalau mereka masih ngotot menggelar musda, kami tidak segan-segan membubarkan paksa dengan cara apapun," kata ketua Markas Besar Forum Bersama Laskar Merah Putih Sulsel, A Noer Aliem, di Warkop Dg Sija, Makassar, Minggu (25/9)

Menurut Noer Aliem, dalam SK kepengurusan Nomor 014.A/SK/MB/FB/LMP/III/2010, tanggal 01 Maret 2010 yang ditandatangani oleh almarhum Ketua Umum LMP Eddy Hartawan, masa kepengurusannya tercatat akan berakhir hingga 2015.

"Jadi kalau ada pihak-pihak diluar kami yang mengatasnamakan Laskar Merah Putih di Sulsel maka kami tidak segan membubarkannya," tegas Aliem.

"Saidina Ali telah meriwayatkan bahawa Nabi Muhammad s.a.w telah bersabda:

"Apabila kamu mempunyai 200 dirham dan telah cukup haul (genap setahun) diwajibkan zakatnya 5 dirham. dan tidak diwajibkan mengelurkan zakat (emas) kecuali kamu mempunyai 20 dinar (salah satu matawang zaman dahulu yang digunakan di negara Arab). Apabila kamu mempunyai 20 dinar dan telah cukup haulnya, diwajibkan zakatnya setengah dinar. Demikian juga kadarnya jika nilainya bertambah dan tidak diwajibkan zakat bagi sesuatu harta kecuali genap setahun."

Senang cerita, sesiapa yang bernilai RM3000 (bergaji sebanyak itu dalam setahun), wajib bayar zakat.

4. Nak Bayar Kat Sapa??

An syorkan kita bayar terus di Pusat Zakat negeri masing2. Ini kerana kita boleh dapatkan pelbagai maklumat mengenai zakat terutamanya mengenai potongan cukai.

Di Pusat Zakat akan mencadangkan anda untuk membuat potongan zakat secara bulanan, berdasarkan jumlah zakat pada tahun lepas. Ini akan memudahkan pemotongan cukai berjadual (PCB) kerana sudah mengambil kira zakat. (refer no.3)

5. Motivasi

Dengan berzakat akan diberi ganjaran 700 kali ganda untuk mereka nikmati semata-mata untuk menjamin kebahagiaan mereka di akhirat. Oleh itu zakat merupakan simpanan faedah di akhirat sebanyak 700%.

Banjir terburuk tenggelami 1.5 juta hektar sawah lima negara

HANOI: Banjir besar melanda Asia dilaporkan menjejaskan jelapang padi di rantau berkenaan hingga boleh menyebabkan harga makanan meningkat sekali gus menambah beban petani yang kebanyakannya dibelenggu kemiskinan.

Kira-kira 1.5 juta hektar kawasan penanaman padi di Thailand, Vietnam, Kemboja, Laos dan Pakistan terjejas teruk dan berisiko musnah akibat banjir terburuk yang melanda kali ini.

Di Thailand, pengeksport beras terbesar dunia, 237 penduduk dilaporkan maut dalam banjir dengan satu juta hektar sawah padi atau 10 peratus kawasan penanaman musnah.

Musim hujan di Laos dan Kemboja juga menyebabkan kerugian besar sejak beberapa minggu ini dan pakar berkata, banjir kini memasuki Lembah Mekong di Vietnam, pengeluar beras utama global.

Ribut tropika yang melanda Laos sejak Jun membunuh sekurang-kurangnya 23 orang di negara itu dan merosakkan lebih 60,000 hektar padi, kata laporan terbabit.

Jauh ke barat, banjir di kawasan penanaman padi dan kawasan penanaman lain di Pakistan menyebabkan kerugian di negara itu dicatatkan hampir AS$2 bilion (RM6.1 bilion).

“Keseluruhan rantau ini akan mengalami kenaikan harga beras kerana banyak kawasan tanaman musnah.

Kemusnahan tahun ini amat serius dan ia akan mengambil masa sebelum penduduk dapat meneruskan kehidupan biasa,” kata Margareta Wahlstrom, ketua pengurangan bencana Pertubuhan Bangsa-Bangsa Bersatu (PBB) dalam satu kenyataan.

37. The current rate of 5% on real property gains tax (RPGT) is not effective in curbing real estate speculative activities. If not controlled, it will put pressure on the price of real estate. In the long run, it will jeopardise the ability of the low- and middle-income groups to buy houses. To overcome this concern, the Government proposes the RPGT rate be reviewed. For properties held and disposed within 2 years, the RPGT rate is 10%. For properties held and disposed within a period exceeding 2 years and up to 5 years, the rate is 5%. Properties held and disposed after 5 years are not subject to RPGT. I am confident the revised RPGT rates are low and will not affect genuine property owners and will curb speculative activities.

74. The Government will undertake measures to ease rising costs and prices as well as reduce the burden of the rakyat, as follows:

First: Increase the number of Kedai Rakyat 1Malaysia (KR1M) nationwide in 2012. KR1M offers 250 types of 1Malaysia products, comprising consumer goods which are up to 40% cheaper. In view of the overwhelming response, the Government plans to open an additional 85 units in 2012 with an allocation of RM40 million;

Second: Open 30 units of Agro Bazaar Kedai Rakyat nationwide to market agriculture produce and 1Malaysia brand products. In addition, the Government will expand the sales of 1Malaysia products in all outlets under the Retail Shop Transformation (TUKAR) programme, FELDA retail stores and convenient stores at petrol stations nationwide; and

Third: Extend and promote the Menu Rakyat 1Malaysia which offers popular menu sets at reasonable prices with a maximum of RM2 for breakfast and RM4 for lunch. Currently, more than 700 food operators are participating and this will be extended to 3,000 operators by end-2012. To further expand this initiative, the Government encourages all cafeteria operators in Government offices and the private sector to implement the Menu Rakyat 1Malaysia.

75. To meet the demand for houses from those earning below RM3,000, the Government launched the My First Home Scheme in March 2011. To expand the scheme, the Government proposes to increase the limit of house prices from a maximum of RM220,000 to RM400,000. This improved scheme will be available to house buyers through joint loans of husband and wife beginning January 2012.

To enable buyers to own houses, the Government established the 1Malaysia People’s Housing (PR1MA) as the sole agency to develop and maintain affordable and quality houses, specifically for middle-income group. PR1MA will be the developer for projects on land owned by the Government. In this regard, the Government intends to develop several plots of Government-owned land around Sungai Besi and Sungai Buloh. The Government will also identify areas in the vicinity of MRT, LRT and other public transport system to be developed by PR1MA for housing projects.

77. In addition, PR1MA also welcomes the cooperation with private sector to develop similar projects. In this respect, several private developers responded to the Government’s call to provide affordable and quality housing. PR1MA will play a main role in ensuring that the distribution of the housing units will be transparent and fair through an open balloting system. In 2011, 1,880 houses will be built in Putrajaya and Bandar Tun Razak.

78. In 2012, a total of 7,700 houses will be built in Cyberjaya, Putra Heights, Seremban, Damansara and Bukit Raja. House prices under this scheme are lower than market prices as the land and facilitation funds are provided to developers. As an example, one apartment unit with an area of 1,000 square feet in Putrajaya is priced RM150,000 compared with the market price of RM220,000. The Government will also provide 100% stamp duty exemption on loan instruments for the purchase of houses.

79. Most houses are sold before construction starts and buyers bear risks of projects being delayed or abandoned. To protect buyers, the Government will encourage the construction of more houses using the build then sell concept. For this purpose, Islamic banks have agreed to provide shariah-compliant financing and undertake construction risks. Instalments only commence after the house is completed. This scheme will be implemented for houses costing RM600,000 and below.

81. The Rumah Mesra Rakyat (RMR) programme, managed by Syarikat Perumahan Negara Berhad (SPNB), will be continued to help the low-income group to own decent houses. Under this programme, those with land but without a house or live in dilapidated houses are eligible for financing to build a house. SPNB will build 10,000 units in 2012. Each house costing RM65,000 will be sold for RM45,000 and the Government will subsidise RM20,000. For this, the Government will allocate RM200 million.

89. To increase disposable income and encourage savings among the low-income group, the Government will introduce Skim Amanah Rakyat 1Malaysia or SARA 1Malaysia. The scheme is available to households with income below RM3,000 per month and will benefit 100,000 households. Participants can apply for a RM5,000 loan with a repayment period of 5 years. At the end of 5 years, the participant is expected to receive an attractive net return. The scheme will be implemented by Permodalan Nasional Berhad in collaboration with selected financial institutions, effective January 2012.

97. In 2011, the Government allocated RM120 million to TEKUN. To incentivise small entrepreneurs, I propose that this allocation be increased to RM300 million. Amanah Ikhtiar Malaysia (AIM) will also provide RM2.1 billion for micro financing to entrepreneurs, particularly for women. From this total, RM100 million each is provided for Malaysian Indian and Chinese entrepreneurs, through a special unit under AIM. The Government proposes that micro financing loan instruments be given stamp duty exemption.

98. Currently, cervical cancer is the second highest cancer cases amongst Malaysian women. Advancement in medical sciences has enabled this illness to be prevented through immunisation. At the moment, the Ministry of Health in collaboration with the Ministry of Education has implemented free immunisation for Form 1 female students in Government schools, Government-aided schools, private and international schools from April to May 2010.

112. To ease the rakyat’s high cost of living, the Government proposes to provide one-off cash assistance, as follows:

First: Assistances of RM500 to households with a monthly income of RM3,000 and below. This unprecedented measure reflects the Government’s commitment to reduce the impact of the increasing cost of living on the low-income group. A total of 3.4 million or 53% of total households are expected to benefit from this assistance. This assistance involves an allocation of RM1.8 billion. To be eligible, the head of each household must register with the Inland Revenue Board Malaysia which is entrusted to implement this programme. This assistance will be distributed through banks and post offices;

Graphene: A Miracle Material In The Making

Over the past decade, many scientists have been hard at work breaking apart lumps of graphite in their labs. With meticulous care, they ground crystals to ever finer powders, cutting, cleaving, polishing and inspecting, like expert jewellers coaxing gems from lumps of unappealing carbon. And just like those jewellers, the scientists' goal was a product far more valuable than the raw material. They were trying to produce graphene, a flake of graphite just one atom thick.

Graphene is an atomic-scale honeycomb lattice made of carbon atoms.

Two of those scientists, Andre Geim and Konstantin Novoselov, both professors at the University of Manchester, made history in 2004 when they used adhesive tape to peel apart shavings of graphite until the pieces were just one atom thick, and were awarded the Nobel prize for physics last year for their groundbreaking experiments into graphene.

Graphene: Strongest Material on Earth

A number of companies are now working on this material and mainstream consumer electronics companies, such as Samsung (which has invested heavily in research and development) predict many graphene-based products will be on the market within five years.

Why all the excitement? When graphite is broken down into graphene, the ultra-thin flakes take on unusual and exciting new properties. Three million of these sheets stacked on top of one another would stand just one millimetre high, and yet graphene is the strongest material ever measured, some 200 times stronger than steel. It is also the most conductive. At the atomic level, it resembles a chicken wire lattice of carbon molecules that is so fine that not even a hydrogen molecule can pass through it.

"Graphene is a fascinating material," says Joerg Heber, editor of the journal Nature Materials. "It is ultra-thin but mechanically very tough, as the bonds between the carbon atoms are strong. These bonds can also carry large electrical currents, which means that electronic devices such as graphene transistors can be miniaturised far beyond present silicon standards."

By seeding plastics with just 1% graphene they can become conductive while remaining transparent. This is good news for manufacturers of devices such as mobile phones, as current touchscreen technology uses expensive and increasingly scarce rare-earth minerals. Graphene's unique properties also offer the possibility of ultra-sensitive detectors that could diagnose diseases like cancer far earlier than current tests.

The unpredictability of how materials behave at the nanoscale, however, presents a double-edged sword. Diamonds, coal, soot, graphite and graphene are all naturally occurring forms of carbon molecules, but each has distinct chemical and physical properties. As with any other new material, the question of human health impacts comes up.

"There are no special features of graphene identified yet to suggest anomalous toxicity," says Professor Kenneth Dawson, director of the Centre for BioNano Interactions, "and these tests are carried out at exposures unimaginable in real-life scenarios. Graphene has a positive outlook; there are no flies in the ointment yet." However, this is not cause for complacency, he adds. "It is all an ongoing study, with no final results."

"For a material to present new health risks it must be able to get into the body, and once there cause harm in unanticipated ways," says Professor Andrew Maynard, director of the Risk Science Centre at the University of Michigan School of Public Health. "It is hard to imagine how graphene in its pure form could be ingested or inhaled in significant quantities, given the size of the sheets being used and the circumstances under which they are utilised. However, if somehow it could get into the body, its unusual properties may cause harm in ways that are currently hard to predict. On the other hand, it may be relatively benign – it's hard to tell without the relevant research."

Making Graphene

The issue of the safety of graphene is more relevant to workers handling this nanomaterial than consumers using the end product. Waste management of products containing graphene is also an issue, and special disposal policies, like those for batteries and fridges, may need to be put in place. As new products are developed, the nanotech industry is looking to regulators to provide clear instructions on how to get those products approved for market. If no tests exist with which to prove their products safe, wondrous devices such as transparent touch screens will be stuck on the shelf.

Unfortunately, the UK has not responded well to the challenge of regulation, having created a system criticised as "top heavy with a labyrinth of advisory, consultative and co-ordinating committees, [that] impede decision-taking, rather than facilitating it", according to a report published by Research Councils UK.

At the European level, current legislation is considered suitable in principle to cover nanotechnologies and nanomaterials. However, some knowledge gaps about the safety of nanomaterials have been identified and research has been intensified to fill those gaps.

"Regulation of nanomaterials such as graphene must tread a fine line," says Maynard. "Too little, and we will be dogged by the spectre of unpredictable and uncertain risks. But too much and the potential gains graphene research offers in areas like clean energy, food safety, and electronics will never leave the drawing board."

The song is great, but knowing the feeling sucks balls. I suppose anyone reading this, or listening to the song knows the feeling. Do you have that gnawing emptiness in your chest like I do? Its the fact that time moves in one direction and there is no do-overs in this life that makes it worse. Anyone wanting a mate, a companion, a lover, a boyfriend or girlfriend, feels that need to find home. Home in the sense that a lover makes you feel comfortable and safe, like being truly home. Sometimes we search for shortcuts to that place of peace, and end up in the thorns. Still, somewhere in this city (this life) is a road I know, where we (or me, or me and someone else) could make it. Never give up.

Never Forget : Al-Aqsa Mosque fire on 21 Aug 1969

In the morning of August 21, 1969, a fire at Masjid al-Aqsa, the al-Aqsa Mosque opposite the Dome of the Rock on the Temple Mount in Jerusalem, gutted the southeastern wing of the mosque. The area is known to Muslims as Haram as-Sharif, or Noble Sanctuary. The location of the mosque has been venerated by Muslims for almost 1,300 years, as the reputed site of a visit by Mohammed on his winged horse, El-Baraq.

The fire destroyed a priceless one-thousand-year-old wood and ivory pulpit (minbar)that had been sent from Aleppo by Saladin. Damage to the mosque later was restored by contributions from Jordan at a cost of about $US9 million.

Immediately after the fire was discovered, stormy demonstrations broke out in the Arab sections of Jerusalem and in the territories. Police blocked all entrances to the Temple Mount and mobilized thousands of officers to deal with rioters. In the afternoon, a general curfew was declared in East Jerusalem. It was assumed by officials that the fire was caused by an electrical fault, and the fire was put out quickly, but rumors spread of Israeli responsibility.

The president of the Muslim Council claimed arson and charged deliberately slow response on the part of the fire brigades, although brigades from West and East Jerusalem fought the blaze together for four hours while an angry Muslim crowd chanted “Allahu Akbar” and “Down with Israel.” The fire was put out by Israeli firemen, despite attacks upon them by Muslim bystanders, who also cut some of the fire hoses. Onlookers stoned Israeli fire trucks summoned to extinguish the fire, claiming they brought gasoline instead of water to the fire.

By the following day, it become apparent that a non-Jewish tourist from Australia was responsible for the blaze. On August 23, Dennis Michael Rohan was arrested for arson, suspected of starting the fire. Rohan was an Australian Protestant follower of an evangelical sect known as the Church of God. By his own admission, Rohan hoped to hasten the coming of the Messiah by burning down the al-Aqsa Mosque. Rohan told the court that he acted as “the Lord’s emissary” on divine instructions, in accordance with the Book of Zechariah, and that he had tried to destroy the al-Aqsa Mosque in order to rebuild the Jewish Temple on the Temple Mount. He was hospitalized in a mental institution, found to be insane and was later deported from Israel.

However, anti-Israel accusations persisted. The fire occurred within two years after the Temple Mount had returned to control of a Jewish state for the first time in two millennia, a result of the Six Day War. Arab leaders, stung by the Israeli victory, blamed the Jews for the fire in protests and riots that erupted throughout the world. King Faisal of Saudi Arabia seized on the charges of Israeli culpability to rally Muslim heads of state, convening a first-ever Islamic Summit in Rabat, Morocco in September 1969, leading to the creation of the Organization of the Islamic Conference.

The fire has been regularly commemorated with attacks on Israelis. For example, on August 19, 1993 nine Israeli soldiers were killed in southern Lebanon. A statement issued by Hezbollah announced the assault was timed to mark the anniversary. After an August 21, 1995 bus bombing in Jerusalem, Syrian radio aired statements by Fayiz Qabdil in a “Palestine Broadcast” segment linking the bus attack to commemoration of the al-Aqsa fire. Qabdil said:
•Michael Rohan is an Israeli Jew even though Israel tried to prove that he is not a Jew, a Zionist or an Israeli when it claimed that he was an Australian. [The Jerusalem bombing proves] that death will be the lot of the enemies of Arab Jerusalem and Arab Palestine.

Even Muslim spokesmen in the United States repeated this calumny. The Rochester Democrat and Chronicle published a letter on June 13, 1996, from Ahmed Ibrahim Lobad asserting that:
•It is impossible to detail all incidents of Israeli destruction, desecration and usurpation of Muslim and Christian holy place in a brief letter. To mention a few: In 1969 Zionists burned and heavily damaged part of the al-Aqsa Mosque, Israeli authorities would not help [sic] in extinguishing that fire.

Ibrahim Hooper of the Council on American-Islamic Relations in The Washington Post, October 16, 1996, includes “the 1969 arson attack on Al-Aqsa Mosque” in a list of alleged Israeli violations of the sanctity of Islamic sites in Jerusalem.

The Palestinian Authority teaches through its schoolbooks and through its leaders that Israel stood behind the fire as part of its war against Islam. During a special program that commemorated the burning of the mosque, Sheik Ikrima Sabri, the Mufti (Islamic religious leader) of Jerusalem said:
•Preparations for this crime took place that were expressed in the statements of senior officials and rabbis who said that Al-Aksa does not belong to the Muslims and that it may be destroyed… They tried to instigate people against those in charge of Al-Aksa and threaten them… Rohan the Australian who burned Al-Aksa had no idea what Al-Aksa was. He was recruited by number of people who trained him to do this dangerous and sinful task. The long-term goal was, as it was stated back then, a plot whose main goal was to attack the Muslim holy sites…

Even the Wall Street Journal, as late as November 13, 2000, erroneously claimed that Rohan was Israeli, burning the al-Aqsa on “what Jews call the Temple Mount.” The Journal ran a correction on November 15, 2000.

Ironically, it is not the Jews but rather Muslim authorities who control the immediate area of the Temple Mount. As a result of the Six-Day War in 1967, when Jerusalem once again became a united city, the Israeli Knesset passed an amendment to the Law and Administration Ordinance, which extended Israeli sovereignty to the eastern part of the City of Jerusalem, including the Old City where the Temple Mount stands. At the same time, the Knesset also passed the Safeguarding of the Holy Places Law, which states:
•The holy places shall be safeguarded against desecration and any other harm, and from anything liable to impede freedom of access of members of religious denominations to the places sacred to them or to their feelings regarding those places.

He is the CEO, creator, and co-founder of LazyTown Entertainment. This company produces books, videos, games, and sporting goods to help promote fitness and a healthy lifestyle to children

He is also creator of the show LazyTown (Latibær in Iceland), where he plays Sportacus. LazyTown, a phenomenally successful television show for children that is seen in 120 countries. Scheving also starred in the 2010 film The Spy Next Door

"We are expert in reaching young children," says Scheving. The former aerobics champion devised LazyTown as a way of getting kids to eat right and leap off their sofas for fat-burning fun. (And as a way of making money, even though he prefers to talk as if running a charity.) The health minister in his native Iceland credited the show with reducing childhood obesity in his country and sending sales of fruit and vegetables soaring. As a result, governments in Australia, Latin America, Scandinavia and Europe have enlisted Sportacus for public health campaigns.

My friend became champion of snooker in our country. In three years I was European aerobics champion and came second in the world.") Having done that he saw that children "didn't have a role model for fitness. Only Popeye, who smokes and hits people." He also saw that attitudes to health were changing, and went for the gap in the market. Sportacus began life as a gymnastic elf in a book, then a musical, then a television series. Filmed in a purpose-built studio, it is the most expensive television show ever made for children, at a million dollars an episode.

He once trained as a carpenter and still lives in a house in Iceland that he built "between 10 and midnight every night for three years", with his wife and their three children. Living up to his own role model is sometimes not easy. "You're gonna meet all the mums and dads in the shops. If you do anything bad for kids, they're gonna kick your ass. They know where you live. It's difficult for me: if you're a superhero all day then you come home and you're not, even your wife complains." We all know that feeling.
